My name is Erika DeRoberts, the artist and creative entrepreneur behind Cherry Lane Art. When you get that inevitable ‘where are you from’ question in a conversation with a new friend, my answer has always been complicated. I am the daughter of German immigrants who settled in Ontario. My family moved every couple of years and found living all over the United States, and even Mexico.

Art had always been the gift that I squeezed into the margins of my life, taking classes, teaching and creating whenever I could. But with the responsibilities of family life with three daughters, and a demanding corporate career, the moments of joy with art were few and far between. I looked at other artists with a mixture of awe and envy at the courage it took to live out their dreams. I was scared that my inner light and truest gift was slowly being extinguished. Perhaps it was the silver lining of the 2020 shutdown, I was finally awoken to the fact that life is so very precious and deserves to be fully lived. I left my job and allowed myself to live wholly, no longer divided between responsibilities and passion. I took some time to heal, nurture my family and travel. . .and then began creating and Cherry Lane Art was born.

Now that I’ve been living as a full-time artist for a couple years, I am finding balance in pursuing my most important work while caring for my family, resting, hiking mountains, going on walks with friends or just reading and thinking. My creativity and productivity is not managed like a task-master, pushed with endless hours of toil. It is honored with a new-found understanding of the relationship between good work and play, focus and rest.

I love the way that art can amplify the sacred and challenge the status quo. The arts help us to hear beyond the cacophony of this chaotic world, they unite us and remind us of our shared humanity. My favorite days are spent outside gathering inspiration and painting murals or in my studio at Good Art Co creating and translating the beauty I’ve discovered onto canvas.

The path of life is winding and ever-changing. . .I’m grateful for the chance to no longer withhold my true gifts and to offer them to you.
