"My art almost always features a face. As a portrait painter I am endlessly fascinated by the human or animal figure. I am basically self-taught, having spent years looking closely at great art in books as well as in galleries and museums. I am inspired by the drama of Rembrandt, the skill of Bouguereau, and the colors of Renoir. A recent trip to Italy has renewed my interest in Renaissance painters, especially works done by women, so am challenge to copy and learn from these images. Be it contemporary images of children or images from 500 years ago, I strive for realism using the lush colors of traditional oil paint."
