As a believer in Elohim, the Creator God, the time I dedicate to my work is not only spent responding to the beauty I find in Him, but a divine exorcism of my capacity to create as His image-bearer and thus, a means of knowing Him. The temptation, as with my faith, is to assume an air of control – to conquer the darkness by authoring a light of my own design. Rather, I strive to enter the space as a witness – to hear His voice even as I hear the work cry out for one stroke or another; to rest when the work is silent – with the hope that the Holy might be translated through my humanity. This posture between myself, my work, and my God is a call and response, a hymn I sing back to my Creator. I work with what I best know and paint in tones that resonate more deeply than words or imagery, tones that must be arranged in color and felt even if they are not understood.
