Vat Dye/Discharge is a process where color is discharged (removed) and replaced by new color in a single step. There’s also a “special effect,” a light colored “halo” around the new color areas. I use block printing to make my designs.
Students will use discharge paste, with added vat dyes. They will use found objects to print with and will also create an original printing block. At the end of the class, students will leave with one small piece of cotton or silk noil fabric (which can be sewn into a pillow or other project) and one silk scarf.
