Details

Sumi-e is traditional Japanese black ink painting where the practitioner attempts to express complex feelings and subjects with simple, minimalistic black Sumi ink strokes. Derived from charcoal, these simple Sumi ink strokes are the key to making an expressive, yet tranquil painting. Sumi-e originated from Zen Art, which Buddhist monks and Samurai used to meditate and develop discipline. We will paint simple and fun subjects from nature, such as fish, plants, animals, and basic Japanese calligraphy. Students will learn the basic techniques including making ink, brush strokes, creating traditional and non-traditional subjects, along with knowledge of the history and culture of this art form. Due to the nature of this art form, even a participant who feels they have little artistic ability will be able to create beautiful works of art to bring home.
