Much of the work in this exhibition comes from drawing while driving. It’s a time to think, wonder and turnoff. Images wash by, constantly changing; strip malls, barbecue stands, cars, trucks, backyards. I amalgamate what I see into drawings by combining, layering, adding and subtracting. New objects begin to build, drip, float, stack, fall, and recline into an expressive constellation of forms and color. Familiar places take on a surreal life. The work represents how I use the responsiveness of clay and the immediacy of painting and drawing. What results are imaginitive sculpture, pottery, paintings and drawings that depict fabricated reality in the medium of the everyday.
Included for context as needed:
How we see and experience the mystery as it incarnates in our everyday life is the pure definition of what it means to be human. -Flannery O'Connor
Imagination is more amazing than anything in life. Life is more amazing than anything you can make up. (Sheila Heti, Alphabetical Diaries)
