Ever wondered how to use color to tell a story? Join us for an introduction to oil painting class, perfect for beginners and enthusiasts alike, where we will focus on color's narrative potential. Students will be introduced to direct oil painting techniques, painting alla prima (wet into wet), and focusing on composition, color, and brush strokes. In each class, we will discuss the psychology behind a certain color and how to use color and composition to create a mood. Using Hershey's Kisses, students will create 4 small paintings exploring different colors and the emotions behind them.

Class Dates: 6/17 (Blue), 6/19 (Red), 6/24 (Green), 6/26 (Purple)

Materials: A list will be provided upon registration.

Price: $200 for all 4 or $60 per class. (Because we will be working on a different drawing/painting each week, this class will still work for you if you can only come to 1 or 2 of them. I understand how summer is!)

Class Format:

This hands-on course combines demonstrations, practical exercises, and individualized instruction to help you build confidence and proficiency in oil painting. Each class, we will discuss a specific color, how it makes us feel, and how to use that to enhance the story of our paintings. Class 1: Blue, Class 2: Red, Class 3: Green, Class 4: Purple.

We will discuss the following topics:

Materials and Tools: Why would we create a study before we start the painting? Why would we start on a toned canvas? Why do we need to mix a medium into our paint?

Basic Techniques: We will learn how to think about the shadows and lights in paint, different kinds of brush strokes, and how to think about object edges.

Composition and Design: We will explore principles of composition, perspective, and how to use color to make an image more exciting.

Color Theory: Understand the basics of color theory and how to create harmonious palettes in your paintings. We will think about the psychological impact of color and how different colors can create a mood.

Personal Expression: Discover ways to express your unique artistic voice using oil paint.

Submission Deadline: Jun 17, 2025 3:00 PM
