Performing, creating and teaching music with over 25 years experience of working with children and adults in addition to a BA in music therapy has shaped my style to be ideal for working with students with a wide range abilities. As a multi-instrumentalist who plays piano, banjo, guitar, ukulele and washboard, I perform for audiences with diverse interests. Music can strengthen understanding and learning of a wide variety of concepts. By day I teach classes around the upstate for kids and in the evenings I perform songs from my collection of original songs. Preservation of folk roots music is important to me and apparent in my sound and repertoire. In recent years I’ve increased my knowledge of Jazz and Blues with New Orleans sounds inspired band, Tuba Gin where I play keys, banjo, washboard and vocals.
Much of my recent work in schools integrates music into lessons for early learners about Earth Sciences by using music to create scenes that immerse students’ minds in different environments of our world. My lessons include songs, instruments, cloths, puppets, props, sounds, stories and imagery that bring the experience of musical connection to life. As well as teaching basic music theory concepts, I use music to build on curriculum for reading and pre-reading skills, math, history, science, socialization, learning skills, confidence and creative outlet.
