Spartina Consort will highlight music by renowned Baroque era women composers and explore their connections to some of their (now) better known male contemporaries. The women contributed to the rich musical life around them in various ways. Princess Anna Amalia of Prussia, a powerful Abbess as well as composer, was sister to Frederick the Great and the patron of CPE Bach. Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre a professional composer for Louis XIV, worked alongside Marais and other prominent French musicians. Isabella Leonarda, an Italian nun, was one of the most prolific composers of her time. Spartina Consort is an ensemble of Charleston musicians with a passion for playing Renaissance and Baroque music on authentic instruments. Members are: Susan Conant (recorder), Marcy Jean Brenner (viola da gamba), David Hunt (viola da gamba) and Julia Harlow (harpsichord).
