In this course, intermediate to advanced silversmithing students will be introduced to the technical aspects of both creating their own basket settings and prong setting faceted stones. Students will have the opportunity to practice and develop their own personal skills in basket fabrication and in prong setting stones. Skills learned can be applied to all future projects.
NOTE: The goal of this class is strictly technical. Students will not focus on making a ‘final piece’ in this workshop, rather, they will focus intently on developing the skills to effectively and accurately create custom baskets. Students who have never prong set will also practice this separately.
The cost of this class does not include the cost of silver. Students can bring their own faceted stone (round or oval) that are at least 9mm in size. If students don’t have their own stones, Katie will have some inexpensive practice stones to choose from on site.
*If advanced students have a project near completion they would like to make a setting for, they are encouraged to bring this with them to assemble and finish. Examples would be a bracelet, pendant, or ring with all other features already fabricated. Please don’t plan to make a piece AND a setting in this class — there simply will not be time.
Prerequisite: Some prior silversmithing experience is helpful, including proficiencies in sawing, soldering, and bezel setting.
