I’ve always believed that artists and makers are tethered to the landscape they live in. As a heritage craftsperson, my works have been inspired by three physiographic regions — Rural Piedmont, Southern Appalachian’s and the sound country of the Albemarle-Pamlico Peninsula.
For 40+ years I have practiced and instructed in broom-making, white oak basketry, bookbinding, trellis designs, wattle fencing, and a host of other traditional skill sets. I taught several of these for 10 years at the NC Arboretum in Asheville. Most recently, my works have been inspired through my lifetime interest and profession in natural history.
I create Midcentury modern, hand carved wall sculptures of indigenous birds made from local sourced wood and reclaimed exotic woods. These series of works are entitled, Southern Silhouettes. I also have a line of wood + tin fish that are hand carved and utilize reclaimed wood & roofing tin. As a side note, I served six years as an active board member at Pocosin Fine Art & Craft School in Columbia, NC. I lived in Asheville for 25 years and was active in promoting arts & crafts. As a side note, I was born in Greenville in 1957 and it feels again like home many decades later. My wife Candace & I recently moved to the Upstate to be closer to our daughter and 6-month old grandson. We have attended over a dozen First Fridays during our 3 years residing here. ❤️ them!
