Artist Statement

The work displayed here is a small vignette of an ongoing project. This series chronicles the rise of a powerful individual, who ultimately uses their authority for good. Specifics of the story are told metaphorically, for example, I use references to Greek mythology, such as Zephyros and Pan. These canonical stories suggest concepts like seasonal changes. This work is split into three acts that correspond to the seasons; winter, spring/summer and autumn. In winter, the protagonist is faced with the dilemma of character. They must choose between self-preservation and self-sacrifice. In act 2 (spring/summer), the character has selected their path. They grow despotic, developing a desire for power, which they pursue through unjust means. In act 3 (autumn), the character achieves authority. The twist is that they use their power altruistically, making sacrifices for the benefit of others. In the autumn, food is harvested and plants die in service and in preparation for the next cycle.

Directions

My studio is located in the Roe Art Building at Furman University. From downtown Greenville, take Poinsett Highway (US 276W) towards Travelers Rest. Take the Furman University exit. At the front gate, bear right onto the traffic circle, then take a right onto Carl Kohrt Drive. The Roe Art Building (and parking lot) is accessible by taking the first left off of Kohrt Drive.
