The power of art, for me, comes from its energy, its motion, the visual tension created by form and color. The colors and marks I use build on each other, creating the energy. It's a feeding, rolling kind of thing, combining painting and drawing.
My work expresses and reshapes all I see and hear, through color and line, ending up with imagery sometimes meditative or ethereal, sometimes bold and striking. Even though I'm informed by everything I do or see, those things are unlikely to show up in my art as I saw them originally, as a leaf in my driveway, building along the highway or any particular, specific trees.
I'm an explorer of art materials as well as my physical surroundings; never met a crayon or paint or pen or brush or flat clear surface that hasn't called to me somehow - the "mixed media" designation seems made for me!
Mostly, I want my art to engage. Art wants to engage people. A gentleman at a show once asked me what a painting was, what I had in mind when I was making it; I asked him what he saw in it. And he said "You know, this reminds me of a spot on the lane by my grandmother's house." He continued, describing to me a place I'd never been, but somehow my work had brought that scene back to him. That's art engaging the viewer, and exactly what I want to do.
