The Greenville Gay Men’s Chorus will present a concert, “Shining Through,” on Friday, May 13 at First Baptist Church, Greenville. The 7:00 p.m. performance will feature familiar pieces such as “True Colors” and “We Shall Overcome” alongside chorus members’ personal stories about what it means to be a gay man in the South.

According to Artistic Director Shelton Ridge Love, “When our chorus was founded in 2011, we began under the name Pride of Greenville Men’s Chorus, choosing not to label ourselves as a gay chorus in order to navigate the community’s still-evolving cultural landscape—and to allow members who didn't publicly identify as LGBTQIA+ to participate comfortably. By 2019, when we changed our name to Greenville Gay Men’s Chorus the time was right to show our community that we are truly proud of who and where we are. This is what our Spring 2022 concert is all about: Living life authentically.”

The evening will include the humorous touch the organization is known for, with the hilarious “Color Out of Colorado,” as well as Steven Schwartz’s moving work, “Testimony.” And, concert-goers will have the opportunity to help benefit the chorus’s upcoming July trip to San Francisco; there GGMC will attend the farewell performance of San Francisco Gay Mens Chorus Artistic Director Tim Seelig, perform at a number of venues, and volunteer at a soup kitchen serving the homeless. Concert admission is free, but donations are welcomed and can be designated for the summer trip.

Greenville First Baptist Church is located at 847 Cleveland Street. For information on “Shining Through” contact [email protected].
