Greenville, SC – December 4, 2024 — The highly anticipated queer sci-fi feature film E IS FOR: will premiere on December 4th at The Radio Room in Greenville, SC. Directed by local director Welles Davis and starring Maddox-Julien Slide, the film explores self-acceptance, community, and the journey to finding one’s place in the world, set against a sci-fi narrative backdrop.
About the Film
E IS FOR: tells the story of a Black Queer Non-Binary barista and street medic who, after moving back to their southern hometown, discovers they’ve connected to an alternate version of themselves in a parallel timeline. What begins as a surreal connection becomes a personal exploration into self-love and the powerful support of community in overcoming life’s challenges. The film embraces science fiction as a genre that can uniquely reveal the depths of human experience.
Director’s Vision and the Power of Collaboration
Welles Davis (They/Them) has been a force in independent filmmaking for years, with experience spanning from New York to Seoul to the indie scene of Greenville, SC. With a degree in Film from Bard College, Davis’ approach to filmmaking fuses visually rich storytelling with complex character arcs, and in E IS FOR:, they harness both to celebrate resilience and connection.
Reflecting on the film’s creation, Davis shares, “What started as a high-concept idea became a deeply personal story. Instead of saving the world, our protagonist saves themselves. MJ brought their own life experiences to this project, making the story intimate and real. On set, our collaboration blurs traditional roles. I focus on structure and visual storytelling, while MJ brings heart and raw vulnerability. Together, we created a story that is, ultimately, triumphant.”
A Personal Narrative
Star and writer Maddox-Julien Slide (They/Them), a storyteller and screenwriter originally from Greenville and currently living in Detroit, MI, says, “E IS FOR: is a culmination of hard-won life lessons, trauma, and the healing that comes through community care. It’s autobiographical in many ways—a Queer love story, not in the romantic sense, but in the collective empowerment sense. The film is a celebration of how genre stories allow us to explore our deepest humanity. This film is dedicated to everyone working to break free.”
Slide and Davis’ unique creative partnership spans over 15 years, since their first meeting in Greenville’s indie film scene. Together, they have produced short films celebrated for their heart, impact, and commitment to genuine representation.
