Chicora Voices, Greenville's new professional choir, will hold its inaugural performance, "Dancing with Death," at 7pm on November 11, 2022, at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Taylors. Directed by Philip Reed, Chicora Voices brings together musicians from around the southeast to perform ambitious programs of choral music.

Heinrich Schütz’s Musikalische Exequien (1635), a ravishingly beautiful work written as the funeral music for a German nobleman, has become a favorite of early music lovers for its affecting solo passages and sumptuous choral writing.

Hugo Distler’s Totentanz (1934), based on a 65 ft long danse macabre painting in Lübeck, features a flute-wielding Death welcoming a parade of characters from all walks of medieval life to his dance. This moving piece is a powerful touchstone both historical and personal from the hand of a young composer who lived — and died — in the darkest days of German history.
