The Department of Visual Arts at Greenville Technical College is proud to announce our 2023 Visual Arts Annual Student Exhibition (VAASE). VAASE highlights 59 students’ works in 10 categories. Department of Visual Arts (DVA) curriculum is comprised of multiple disciplines in fine art and applied art and most of these disciples are showcased in VAASE. For high school students considering furthering their studies in art, this is an especially apt exhibition to explore. For the general public VAASE can provide a glimpse of many of the fine arts, for example, painting, drawing, and printmaking. Web design, graphic art, photography and typography are also on view. DVA goals of preparing students to move directly into the workforce or on to four-year institutions are in evidence.
VAASE is a celebration of the persistence and accomplishments of all DVA students especially the 50 students who made the time and courageously entered the competition. The Halloween Costume Gala opened VAASE on October 26 with a costume parade and costume portraits. Students, faculty, staff, friends and family feasted on pizza, subs, and treats as they anxiously awaited the awards presentations. Once all had explored the exhibition, Shane Howell, DVA Chair, present ed 25 awards. Each award winner had a moment in the spotlight, many cheers, much applause, and a cash award.
Many thanks to the 2023 VAASE juror, Freda Sue. She spent most of a day diligently and thoughtfully studying the entries. Ms. Sue chose the exhibition and also the award winners. She remarked, “As a juror, I was incredibly impressed by the depth of creativity and the artistic skills demonstrated by the GTC students. Selecting the final pieces was challenging yet rewarding. I aimed to showcase works that exhibited technical proficiency and the ability to evoke emotional resonance. This diverse collection will visually captivate audiences and foster a greater appreciation for the arts for the community.” Freda (Gin-Wen) Sue is an accomplished printmaker, having exhibited her work across the US and in Asia. She currently teaches drawing and printmaking at USC Upstate. Locally she is active in the Contemporary Print Collective and also the Taiwan Society of Printmaking. She earned an MFA from SCAD Atlanta.
VAASE awards are made possible by generous contributions from the Metropolitan Arts Council with funds received from the City of Greenville, BMW Manufacturing Company, Michelin North America, Inc., SEW Eurodrive, and the South Carolina Arts Commission. In addition, this year's corporate sponsors include APCO Plastics, Bennetts’ Frame & Art Gallery, Suburban Paint, and the Greenville Tech Foundation. Thank you all.
