Call for photography subjects: Furman Senior Seminar LGBTQ+ Project

September 16 - November 28
LGBTQIA+ community photography project announcement

My name is Alex Aradas, and I am a senior double major in Studio Art and Politics at Furman. As part of my studio seminar this fall, I’m working on a political photography project, and I want to connect with LGBTQIA+ community members who are interested in being photographed.

My photography project explores themes of Queerness, politics, and resilience through portraiture and still life. The portraits will feature individuals, couples, and groups, each accompanied by a personal object of significance. Participants are encouraged to bring something meaningful, invite others if they wish, and select a location that evokes joy, safety, or comfort. By allowing participants to choose a space, objects, and people that have meaning to them, the project emphasizes both personal and collective representation. In the exhibition space, these images will be placed in dialogue with anti-LBGTQ+ political quotes and policies from the Trump administration and other figures in power. Through this project, my goal is to confront anti-LBGTQ+ sentiment, challenge viewers to reflect on the futures shaped by such voices, and affirm the strength, visibility, and resilience of the Queer community.
