About:

Greenville Open Studios is a weekend event which opens the studios of local visual artists to the public. The event is held annually on the first weekend in November, and showcases artists at work in their studios. Now entering its 12th year, Greenville Open Studios began as an idea cast about during a casual conversation between a small group of artists several years ago; they discussed doing something to raise awareness in the greater community of the tremendous creative energy in the area. The idea has evolved into a full-fledged annual event.

The 2013 self-guided tour features 124 artists and their studios. Studio locations varied throughout a 15-mile radius of downtown Greenville with Easley, Greer, Travelers Rest and Dacusville included. Open Studios catalogues can be found at all the studios as well as here at MAC.

If you haven’t yet visited “All Squared Away,” the exhibit of participating OS artists, stop by MAC during the hours of Open Studios.  The exhibit is a great vehicle to help you decide which artist studios you are going to visit.

All Squared Away, an exhibit consisting of one 12”  x  12” (x 12”) work of art from each of the participating artists, will be on display in the MAC gallery at 16 Augusta Street from October 25 through December 6. The exhibit is an excellent way to become acquainted with the artists’ work, and it is proof positive of the amazing talent among Greenville’s visual artists.

The goals of Greenville Open Studios are to provide free and convenient community access to visual arts, to educate and create a dialogue between artists and the general public by opening artists’ place of work and inviting the community-at-large to participate in the creative process, and to create new marketing opportunities for artists.  It is the organizers’ desire that the project will open up the world of visual artists to everyone – from the seasoned collector to the first-time art buyer to the curious general public.

The specific objectives of Greenville Open Studios are (1) to provide an educational experience to the entire community by inviting the general public to experience the life of local artists at work in the studio environment by giving people the chance to learn about the artistic process as well as sources of artistic inspiration, (2) to give the artists an opportunity to market their work to the local community, (3) to enhance the experience of collecting art by helping people to begin art collections or enhance existing ones and (4) to create greater awareness of the diversity and quality of local visual arts among the general public.

App it Out!

An exciting feature of Greenville Open Studios continues to be a web application. Through your cell phone or through www.greenvilleopenstudios.com, you can access information on the participating artists by name, medium, location and artist statement.  This unique feature also allows you to create a list of artist studios you would like to visit and plan your travel route with a mapping feature that is integrated with Google Maps and GPS devices.  Also featured are hyperlinks for users to visit sponsor websites.  This application was designed and implemented by Merge, and we greatly appreciate the time and investment that Merge has provided for the past three years for this feature.
