Furman University’s Music by the Lake Summer Concert Series celebrates its 50th anniversary this summer. A Greenville tradition since 1968, the series begins Thursday, May 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the university’s amphitheater. Opening the 11-concert series for this golden anniversary is “The Kings of Swing” performed by the Lakeside Concert Band.

The Lakeside Concert Band and other ensembles and artists celebrate the Sounds of Summer Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m. through Aug. 2. Relax on the grounds of the spacious amphitheater by the Furman lake and enjoy a cross-section of Big Band, jazz, bluegrass, contemporary, marches and orchestral favorites. Thanks to generous local sponsors, all concerts are free and open to the public.

Each Thursday during the series, a concert picnic basket filled with treats will be given away to a lucky concertgoer.

The concerts are made possible by Furman University and are sponsored by the Bank of Travelers Rest, George Coleman Ford (Travelers Rest), The Greenville News, Publix Supermarkets Charities, The Woodlands at Furman, Greenville Health System, and Pecknel Music.

Passing time could be lazily sitting on the porch, impatiently waiting for an appointment, surviving the ravages of neglect or quietly bonding with past events or people, especially family. Through their photographs Zane and Patrick are patiently, quietly reconnecting with their own pasts and with their respective families. Both stop time in their images and record particular moments in their own lives and familial relationships. Neither choose to capture holidays or particular celebrations. Both use objects as metaphors for the people and memories of their childhood. Both have traveled home to gather the bits of ”Passing Time” into autobiographic tales. There is less concern with historical accuracy as the mythology of “Passing Time”.

Zane has recorded the weekends he has spent with his mother in her home over the past several years as her health has deteriorated. He states, “My choice of camera—a Polaroid Land Camera—wasn’t coincidental. It is toy-like, and non-confrontational.” Using an extinct camera with discontinued film makes each of his images precious as is his fleeting time with his mother. His small Polaroid images are unique and are reminiscent of the painted miniatures that provided intimate, portable family memories for many, many years into the nineteenth century.

Patrick’s images on the other hand record a particular region of Alabama, Tuskegee, the origin of his parents and their families. He traveled this area as a child to visit his grandparents and other family, their homes, graves, churches. These road trips with his parents became less and less frequent as family moved away or passed on. According to Patrick, “To reconnect with this land and the community my family called home, I have been making regular treks to photograph Alabama over the last decade.” These treks resulted in an ongoing series of photographic images
of store fronts, signs, churches, cemeteries because “I find these structures and the “stories they could tell” curious.

Both Zane and Patrick hold AA degrees in photography from Greenville Technical College. Zane has also completed a BFA at Savannah School of Art and Design and a MFA from Clemson University. Patrick is enrolled in the BFA program at Clemson currently. Zane teaches photography at Greenville Tech and Patrick is Studio Manager and Gallery Assistant.

The Satellite Gallery is pleased to present “OPENING EYES: New Asheville Painting” an exhibition of 6 Asheville based artists curated by Jeremy Phillips. This broad musical satire of America’s seventh president, Andrew Jackson, follows him from the campaign trail all the way through the White House. Jackson captures the Presidency as a born and bred American with a message that resonates with the common people, as opposed to the ruling class that preceded him. Ascending from his Tennessee upbringing, he finds himself in the Oval Office and discovers that campaigning is easy, but governing is hard. This musical explores how our great democratic experiment works and helps us realize how the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Warning: Contains irreverence, language, political shenanigans, a live band, language, populism, whiskey, bar fights, satire, language, and the youngest performer of the main stage season.

Only a few miles apart, the GCMA and the Bob Jones Museum span centuries and continents, and now for the first time, the two powerhouses have collaborated to present Sampling the Old Masters: Highlights from the Bob Jones Museum. Featuring more than 20 examples, the exhibition is on view through December 30 in Gallery 3.

On Friday morning, June 15th, artists will come to MAC to have their surfaces stamped with the FOUP logo. 24 hours later they will return with those same surfaces as completed works of art. The work will then be juried and displayed as an exhibit.

Join us on the evening of June 16th for the awards ceremony and reception. Come see the amazing artwork produced and congratulate the eight artists whose work will be replicated on Greenville’s downtown recycling bins next year.
