Artist Statement

Curiosity as to what lies beneath the surface may be the vital force, or impetus, that initially attracted me to, and keeps me interested in, woodturning. Discovering beauty beneath the mundane. Finding a jewel in the stump, crotch, burl, and knots of the unwanted portions of trees after the lumber and firewood is claimed. A career as a horticulturist, landscape designer, and landscape contractor introduced me to various woods… woodturning showed a completely different perspective. An unveiling of the core… a new beginning. An artful recycling. Bowls, vessels, or abstract sculptures, they all start out the same. A search for what is within… a type of open introspective process for the artist and the wood. A meditation.
