SUMMARY:What Lies Between Us : Caroline Gates Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception Friday\, February 9th\, 6:00 – 8:00pm \nA furtive glances\, a fleeting sigh\, a soft touch–all betray something shimmering in the air between people\, something that has been felt before and will be felt again. The paintings in “What Lies Between Us” dwell in these charged moments\, exploring the nuance of human connection. This series depicts relationships from a woman’s perspective\, revealing the complexities of longing\, vulnerability\, and power.\nPsychological space lies at the heart of these works. Tension between figures is heightened through minimalist settings\, and external elements appear in support of the emotional narrative. Muted tones suggest silence\, occasionally interrupted by a passionate stroke of red. The layered surfaces of oil glazes and impasto marks balance precision and looseness\, mirroring how relationships oscillate between clarity and uncertainty.\nEach painting hovers on the cusp of a moment\, alive with the possibility of closeness or retreat. They invite the viewer to linger on that threshold\, feeling the fragile promise of connection pulsing between the figures. \nArtist bio:\nCaroline Gates is an award-winning figurative painter whose work in oil paint and soft pastel explores human connection\, agency\, and longing. Winner of the 2025 Founders Award at the Seven Bridges Foundation\, her psychologically charged\, narrative paintings have been shown at VillageOne Art\, Aplomb Gallery\, Highline Nine Galleries\, C&B Reichert Gallerie\, and Neighbor Gallery\, which hosted her first NYC solo exhibition in 2023. Inspired by Edward Hopper and Bo Bartlett\, Gates creates cinematic paintings that capture fleeting moments—quiet yet emotionally electric. She invites viewers to imagine the story beyond the frame.\nGates received her MFA at the New York Academy of Art in 2021. She is currently based out of River Rock Art Studio and Gallery in Greenville\, SC\, where she paints and teaches classes and workshops. She takes commissions and offers private and group classes on a limited basis.

SUMMARY:The Big Band Music of Joe Henderson
DESCRIPTION:If there will ever be a “Mt. Rushmore” for great modern tenor sax players\, there’s a strong case for Joe Henderson to be part of it. However\, Joe doesn’t have the same level of awareness as his fellow influential tenor sax giants John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter. And even for those who know of Joe\, few people know about his important big band leadership in the 1960s. \nThe Greenville Jazz Collective strives to present music consistent with its educational mission – to share music that needs to be heard. And so\, Music Director Shannon Hoover has assembled a program of music to shine a spotlight on Joe Henderson\, his compositions\, and specifically his big band music. Fronting the Greenville Jazz Collective Big Band and stepping into the giant shoes of Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone will be Matt Olson and Peter Dimery. \nThe program will feature three views of his music. The big band will play a few arrangements of Joe’s music by other arrangers\, showing how more current musicians look back on his great compositions and build upon them. Secondly\, because Joe was known especially for his small group playing (he played on almost 30 recordings in the years 1963-1968)\, we will feature a small group playing his tune Black Narcissus. \nBut the highlight will be the big band playing the five arrangements (that have been published and are available) played by his 1960’s big band\, some arranged by Joe Henderson himself! His 1960s band included the cream of the jazz world playing in New York at that time\, and along with Thad Jones/Mel Lewis\, Charles Tolliver\, and Duke Pearson blazed the path for the modern big band jazz played now. \nSimply put\, you won’t be able to hear a program of Joe Henderson’s important big band music this year in New York\, Chicago\, or (according to Google) anywhere else…except here in Greenville\, at Centre Stage Theatre on July 27 at 8pm. And if you miss it…it could be years before you could hear it live…anywhere.
