SUMMARY:Piedmont Natural Gas DOWNTOWN ALIVE
DESCRIPTION:The Piedmont Natural Gas Downtown Alive (DTA) presented by Edgeworth Capital Group\, kicks off the weekend every Thursday night with music at NOMA Square on Main Street from 5:30 – 8:30 PM. Since its inception in 1986\, more than 45\,000 people attend this event annually\, and it serves as the single largest fundraiser for the Metropolitan Arts Council’s services and programs. It is also a major force in the economy of downtown Greenville. The City of Greenville Special Events Department has been an outstanding partner in organizing and handling all the logistics of the event. \nTo highlight the visual and performing arts\, the city established the DTA-Metropolitan Arts Council tent. New since 2024\, the City and MAC are inviting multiple artists to be a part of an art market called “ARTS AFTER DARK” – a row of 6 tents featuring artists selling their work and\, if they choose\, participating in demonstrations or offering workshops on the 3rd Thursday of each month. The presence of artists within DTA has always been instrumental in creating greater awareness of the many spectacular visual artists and cultural amenities that make Greenville such a wonderful city. \nWe would like to thank the sponsors of Downtown Alive. We are very thankful for their support during past seasons and look forward to working with them again in the future. \n\nTitle sponsor – Piedmont Natural Gas\nPresenting Sponsor – Edgeworth Capital Group – Ameriprise Financial Services\, LLC\nOther Sponsors – Southern Crown Partners; KW Beverage\, Inc.; Ingles; Pepsi-Cola of Greenville; BreakThru Beverage; COM Federal Credit Union; VCOM\nMedia partners – Audacy; Community Journals; WYFF TV-4; GVL Media; The Fan\nAdditional sponsors –  Michelob Ultra; Cheers SC; Hyatt Regency Greenville; Signatures Apparel; Greenville Bike Taxi; NOMA Square\nYOU! – When you give to MAC\, you help keep programs like DTA thriving. SUMMARY:What Lies Between Us : Caroline Gates Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception Friday\, February 9th\, 6:00 – 8:00pm \nA furtive glances\, a fleeting sigh\, a soft touch–all betray something shimmering in the air between people\, something that has been felt before and will be felt again. The paintings in “What Lies Between Us” dwell in these charged moments\, exploring the nuance of human connection. This series depicts relationships from a woman’s perspective\, revealing the complexities of longing\, vulnerability\, and power.\nPsychological space lies at the heart of these works. Tension between figures is heightened through minimalist settings\, and external elements appear in support of the emotional narrative. Muted tones suggest silence\, occasionally interrupted by a passionate stroke of red. The layered surfaces of oil glazes and impasto marks balance precision and looseness\, mirroring how relationships oscillate between clarity and uncertainty.\nEach painting hovers on the cusp of a moment\, alive with the possibility of closeness or retreat. They invite the viewer to linger on that threshold\, feeling the fragile promise of connection pulsing between the figures. \nArtist bio:\nCaroline Gates is an award-winning figurative painter whose work in oil paint and soft pastel explores human connection\, agency\, and longing. Winner of the 2025 Founders Award at the Seven Bridges Foundation\, her psychologically charged\, narrative paintings have been shown at VillageOne Art\, Aplomb Gallery\, Highline Nine Galleries\, C&B Reichert Gallerie\, and Neighbor Gallery\, which hosted her first NYC solo exhibition in 2023. Inspired by Edward Hopper and Bo Bartlett\, Gates creates cinematic paintings that capture fleeting moments—quiet yet emotionally electric. She invites viewers to imagine the story beyond the frame.\nGates received her MFA at the New York Academy of Art in 2021. She is currently based out of River Rock Art Studio and Gallery in Greenville\, SC\, where she paints and teaches classes and workshops. She takes commissions and offers private and group classes on a limited basis.

SUMMARY:SHELLEY CADE | People Are Strange
DESCRIPTION:The Metropolitan Arts Council is proud to present “People Are Strange”\, a solo exhibition by Greenville artist\, Shelley Cade. Opening Reception September 12th\, 6-8pm. Exhibition runs September 12th – October 17th. \n📍 Metropolitan Arts Council | 16 Augusta Street\, Greenville\, SC\n📅Opening reception: September 12\, 6 – 8 PM\n🆓 Free \nWe invite you to meet Cade’s “strangers”. These distinctive portraits and sculptures all have a story to tell within their expressive lines and atmospheric colors. \nAs Cade shares:\n“My approach to expressing people with a paintbrush often gets weird. But the scratchy layers of paint\, pencil marks\, charcoal smudges and adulterated features — I’ve found — only enhance the story telling. Each of us comes into the world a blank canvas\, and it’s the brush marks of experience which tell our stories and shape who we are.”

SUMMARY:"As I See It" - Lu Wixon
DESCRIPTION:Lu Wixon invites you to the opening reception for her solo show titled “As I see It” at the Metropolitan Arts Council on July 24\, 2025. Come meet the artist\, enjoy light refreshments\, and see her artwork! \nLu grew up in Lafayette\, Louisiana where she earned a BFA from the University of Louisiana.  After graduation\, she spent two years in Trinidad\, West Indies\, quickly earning a reputation as an artist.  She currently lives in Greenville\, South Carolina with her husband where she is involved in the arts community as an artist and former arts educator.  Lu exhibits regularly in the Carolinas and Louisiana and welcomes the community into her studio. \nI paint on wood because I enjoy the organic feel the surface evokes.  Line\, shape\, color\, and negative space\, are the tools I use to portray my feelings of the joy and beauty of the world. The “outlines’ in my work are actually where I don’t paint\, allowing the wood surface to be part of the composition.  My current subjects include figures interacting with the landscape and various aspects of nature.  A partial documentation of my body of work is available at www.LuWixon.com.

His intentions\nare about creating artwork that captures personal elements through his unique style\, while\nsharing his culture\, telling stories and making fine art everyone can enjoy. He aims to inspire\nothers through his work and be an integral part of his community and the world. \n  \n“Desde El Rancho Para El Mundo” aims to capture the essence of the small Mexican town I\ngrew up in with an exploration through multiple mediums and techniques. The work in this show\ntells personal and cultural tales and shows the beauty of my childhood home- an attempt to\ncapture the magic on paper and canvas. It will be some people’s first introduction to myself and\nmy identity that I am proud to showcase this way. This show is about taking more chances in my\ncraft\, feeling free to explore my art and show the wealth of myself as an artist and individual.
