SUMMARY:Justin Ray - A Jazz Underground Sampler
DESCRIPTION:Trumpeter and vocalist extraordinaire Justin Ray brings a program to town with a little of everything you come to the Jazz Underground to hear: Standards\, premieres of original music\, beautiful ballads\, and high-energy romps. \nIf you think a musician who plays trumpet and sings is unusual\, we only have to point first to Louis Armstrong who created the template for both in jazz. Justin Ray also builds upon the legacy of Chet Baker\, who charted with both instrumentals and vocals starting in the 1950s. (Yes\, and the hippest among you might also throw in Jack Sheldon…) \nOn top of that\, Justin is an educator\, composer\, and arranger. In addition to touring with Michael Buble’s band on trumpet\, he also worked for him writing and arranging. So he’s bringing 20 years of high-profile performance experience to Greenville in March! \nThey’ll be performing in our venue\, the Coffee Underground Theater\, which is an intimate listening room which also serves homemade desserts\, delicious coffee from beans roasted on premises\, and an assortment of teas\, wine\, and cocktails.

SUMMARY:GJC Big Band Ellington Nutcracker Suite
DESCRIPTION:Last year\, the Greenville Jazz Collective Big Band performed the Greenville premiere of the complete original score of the Duke Ellington re-creation of the Tchaikovsky Nutcracker Suite. Since then one of our most asked questions has been “Are you all doing the Nutcracker again this year”? \nGreat news…last year’s premiere is becoming this year’s holiday tradition! Make it yours! \nIn 1960 Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn arranged 9 of the original Tchaikovsky dances from his Nutcracker Suite for his big band. But when Duke Ellington wrote for his band\, he wrote every note with specific musicians (some of the greatest jazz musicians ever) in mind. \nThis places unusual demands on all the musicians in a band seeking to perform his Nutcracker Suite. It’s not enough to just read the notes on the 3rd trumpet or lead alto part – each musician needs to create an interpretation that Duke might have expected from his great musicians like Ray Nance or Johnny Hodges. That’s why this important work is rarely heard live and complete in its original score…it demands much from even the best of musicians! \nThe musicians of the Greenville Jazz Collective Big Band are stepping up to play the Ellington Nutcracker again this year. And they will play a few other pieces of jazz holiday music as the perfect wrapper for this suite! So it will definitely be a swinging\, toe-tapping evening. \nYou’ll hear familiar melodies in a new way…even with new titles to match the imaginative twist put on them (can you guess what “Sugar Rum Cherry” is based on?). Fanfares\, tambourines\, a bamboo whistle\, and a hard-swinging rhythm section all make their appearances in this dreamworld “melting pot of musical styles past and present” (NY Times). Truly\, his 1960 Christmas gift for the ages! \nPoe Mill Music is a performance venue (and recording studio) just over a mile northwest of downtown Greenville off of Pete Hollis (SC=183). (You’ve probably driven by it…but never noticed it). Poe Mill is accessible (no steps) and offers plenty of onsite parking. \nAdmission is $30.00 through Eventbrite\, or at the door until tickets are sold out (Poe Mill is smaller than last year’s venue\, so the seats may go fast!)

SUMMARY:Jazz Underground: Joe Davidian Trio Tribute to Bill Evans
DESCRIPTION:The Greenville Jazz Collective Jazz Underground series presents the Joe Davidian Trio performing a tribute featuring the piano trio music of Bill Evans \nNearly all piano trios (piano\, bass\, and drums) playing today have somewhere “in their DNA” the sound of the many Bill Evans trios. What you’ll hear instead from Joe and his trio is a deep exploration of the music of Bill Evans from Joe’s experience both as a performer (playing for a number of years in major NYC clubs) and an educator (he leads the Jazz Studio at the Fine Arts Center here in Greenville). \nBill had led other piano trios\, but his 1960-1961 trio with bassist Scott LeFaro and drummer Paul Motian took the level of interplay between trio members to a level unseen before in jazz\, culminating in a series of famous recordings in June 1961 at the Village Vanguard before Scott’s untimely death. For the next 20 years until his own death\, Bill continued performing in a piano trio format with other major bassists and drummers…but always working with a great deal of interplay within the trio. \nNeedless to say\, presenting a tribute to Bill Evans is a demanding exploration. However\, Joe has been exploring this great music for over 20 years\, mastering the challenging dialog between piano\, bass\, and drums that the music of Bill Evans demands! Joining Joe in this exploration are Shannon Hoover on bass and Rick Dilling on drums. Both of them are uniquely suited to join Joe based upon their considerable musicality and subtlety. \nThe program will include repertoire from his entire piano career\, but with a special focus on those magical years with Scott LeFaro and Paul Motian. So this will be a great evening of jazz\, important to hear and a joy to listen to\, and aligning perfectly with the mission of the Greenville Jazz Collective! \nThey’ll be performing in our venue\, the Coffee Underground Theater\, which is an intimate listening room which also serves homemade desserts\, delicious coffee from beans roasted on premises\, and an assortment of teas\, wine\, and cocktails. SUMMARY:Jazz Underground - Tish Oney Quartet presents Changes: Jazz Seasons
DESCRIPTION:The Greenville Jazz Collective Jazz Underground series hosts The Tish Oney quartet performing songs of the four seasons drawing from the Great American Songbook\, modern jazz composers\, and other great tunes. \nFrom time immemorial until today\, songs reflecting the seasons have been part of our musical culture. Vivaldi is perhaps the first to reflect all four seasons together in a single musical offering. Tish will update this tradition with a singular program of music reflecting all four seasons\, from a variety of great composers and lyricists\, played by some of the best local jazz professionals in town. \nDr. Oney is not only a singer with serious jazz credentials\, she is also a composer\, arranger\, author\, and educator (just check out her credits!). And she has assembled a serious band including Joe Davidian on keys\, Bob Songster on bass\, and Justin Watt on drums that is equally conversant in the musical traditions in this program of music. \nSome of the composers to be featured in the program range from Van Heusen\, Lerner & Loewe\, and Harry Warren (from the Great American Songbook) to jazz musicians like Freddie Hubbard and Abbey Lincoln. So the music will be top shelf! \nThey’ll be performing in our venue\, the Coffee Underground Theater\, which is an intimate listening room which also serves homemade desserts\, delicious coffee from beans roasted on premises\, and an assortment of teas\, wine\, and cocktails.

SUMMARY:Greenville Jazz Collective Local Jazz Composers Concert Contest
DESCRIPTION:Are you a jazz composer? Would you like to hear your music performed by the Greenville Jazz Collective Quintet as part of the Jazz Underground Series? If so\, we’ve got news for you!!! \nThe Greenville Jazz Collective Jazz Underground Series was originally formed to feature the compositions of local composers. We pay homage every year to our roots with a “Local Jazz Composers Concert”\, which this year will be on November 11\, 7pm\, at Coffee Underground. \nThis year\, we’re bringing back something we’ve done in the past…using the concert as a basis for a composers’ contest. Here’s an overview:\n> Composers have the opportunity to submit an original composition for the contest that has not been performed publicly before.\n> The Greenville Jazz Quintet rehearses each piece\, and selects a number of them for performance on November 11. \nYou’ll want to go to our webpage https://gvljazz.com/underground/composers-contest/ for details about the contest\, and how to submit your composition. Deadline is September 30 11:59p EDT.

SUMMARY:The Big Band Music of Joe Henderson
DESCRIPTION:If there will ever be a “Mt. Rushmore” for great modern tenor sax players\, there’s a strong case for Joe Henderson to be part of it. However\, Joe doesn’t have the same level of awareness as his fellow influential tenor sax giants John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter. And even for those who know of Joe\, few people know about his important big band leadership in the 1960s. \nThe Greenville Jazz Collective strives to present music consistent with its educational mission – to share music that needs to be heard. And so\, Music Director Shannon Hoover has assembled a program of music to shine a spotlight on Joe Henderson\, his compositions\, and specifically his big band music. Fronting the Greenville Jazz Collective Big Band and stepping into the giant shoes of Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone will be Matt Olson and Peter Dimery. \nThe program will feature three views of his music. The big band will play a few arrangements of Joe’s music by other arrangers\, showing how more current musicians look back on his great compositions and build upon them. Secondly\, because Joe was known especially for his small group playing (he played on almost 30 recordings in the years 1963-1968)\, we will feature a small group playing his tune Black Narcissus. \nBut the highlight will be the big band playing the five arrangements (that have been published and are available) played by his 1960’s big band\, some arranged by Joe Henderson himself! His 1960s band included the cream of the jazz world playing in New York at that time\, and along with Thad Jones/Mel Lewis\, Charles Tolliver\, and Duke Pearson blazed the path for the modern big band jazz played now. \nSimply put\, you won’t be able to hear a program of Joe Henderson’s important big band music this year in New York\, Chicago\, or (according to Google) anywhere else…except here in Greenville\, at Centre Stage Theatre on July 27 at 8pm. And if you miss it…it could be years before you could hear it live…anywhere.
