Terri Bright / Sonnets

July – August, 2015

Bio:
Terri Bright is a fine art photographer whose work focuses on the articulation of non-traditional beauty. With a background in painting, she now uses the camera to create canvases of quiet, contemplative spaces.

Bright received her MFA from the University of Texas at Austin. She currently teaches photography at Furman University where she is an Associate Professor of Art. Her work has been included in numerous exhibitions throughout the US, including the Society for Contemporary Photography (Kansas City, MO), The Jones Center for Contemporary Art (Austin, TX), Castell Photo Gallery (Asheville, NC), the Houston Center for Photography (Houston, TX), and the Photographic Center Northwest (Seattle, WA).

Artist Statement:
In Sonnets, I create quiet, lyrical narratives from the everyday – inorganic forms disclose life-like characteristics, randomly placed objects seem purposeful, bent frames become graceful. These images are like small meditations, granting permission to pause, and creating space for contemplation. Forgotten items and ordinary spaces possess a kind of wilted beauty that alternately suggest playfulness, tranquility, melancholy and desire.

More examples of her work can be seen at: terribrightphotography.com

Dabney Mahanes: A Woman's Journey

February – April, 2015

Artist Statement:
This body of work, which spans over years of focusing on the female figure, has unfolded as a journey through the many stages of a woman’s life from her youth to her mature years. A large part of myself is in this work yet these images are archetypal, universally symbolic. The three archetypes I have explored are The Maiden, The Mother, and The Wise Woman. These paintings express a moment in time through the image of a single figure, or a figure in relationship to another, or the archetypal figure accompanied by her companions of the natural world. Of course there is a negative aspect as well as a positive aspect to the archetypes. Also these feminine archetypes travel through as male’s life as well. The Raven is the symbol that has accompanied me through darkness, transformation, and birthing into this time of discovery and creativity. This is depicted in my painting “The Ascension of the Animus”. My hope is that the viewer can leave with a deeper awareness of the paths these feminine images weave through his of her life and a higher respect for the wisdom carried by the mature woman.

Artist Bio:
Dabney Mahanes was born in Virginia, graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in Graphic Arts, worked as an illustrator for McGraw Hill and did freelance advertising and book illustration while married and raising 3 children. She now lives in Greenville, South Carolina where she works out of her own studio at 5 Smith Street in the Village Art District as a professional artist and has exhibited her drawings and paintings in North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia.

Spaces: Work by Bruce and Alice Schlein

December, 2014 – February, 2015

Spaces:
This show is about the spaces people occupy, will occupy or have occupied and what is left behind or will be put forward. I try to be in the spaces and imagine what people have done there, a history reconstructed. I have found that every space has its own life, feel and information, which I try to interpret and then convey through my photographs.
The pictures are toned black and white and printed in small scale. This is by intent to encourage the viewer to move in close and experience the image in depth.

Round & Around: Works by Georgia and Darrell Harrison

December – January, 2013

“Round and Around” is a display of round wooden forms made on a lathe. And paintings from around South Carolina.

We have looked forward to our retirement and using some of that time to express our personal involvement with Nature. For us that is trees; their trunks and branches creating shade in summer; in winter creating forms which break the snow and branches which tickle the sky.

Darrell’s bowls echo the stories of tree trunks, sometimes magnificent and sometimes diseased. Each bowl is a new pattern and size which is determined by the artist working with Nature.

Georgia is influenced by George Inness, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth. Her love of Nature and her love of man- made things left to Nature are evident in her work. What stories might they tell? Sometimes it is a lone tree; sometimes a set of electrical boxes or a new house intruding on older homes on a beach. Each painting has its own story.

Phil Garrett: Works on Paper

August – October, 2012

“My work is informed by nature, a kind of mythical nature. The power of storms, the spiritual quality of the elements, the beauty, grace and ferocity of animals — something greater than myself, something I can’t comprehend. Painting and making monotypes is my search for the mystery within the subject, within myself.” -Phil Garrett, 2011

Charcoal Work by Adam Schrimmer

January – February, 2012

During a solo exhibit where he worked ‘live’ Adam’s work was classified as “Emotional Expressionism.” His drawings never take more than a day, they are started and finished in one sitting. No matter the size or subject matter. When he gets inspired to work it is like a surge of energy.. a pulse of power, he becomes like an out of control freight train driven by the music in his ears and the blood pumping in his veins. Adam is a very passionate person and believes strongly that a feeling,
emotion or state of mind cannot be duplicated. This moment, right now, as you read this short bio will be gone in a second and you will never get it back. His drawings are moments in time that he cannot create again, it would never be the same, because the emotional and physical state-of-being that urged him to make that specific piece of art at that specific time, on that specific day are now gone.
