DESCRIPTION:Tiger Strikes Asteroid Greenville (TSA GVL) is pleased to announce our 2026 open call for a solo or two-person exhibition in our gallery space in Greenville\, SC. Running January 24 – February 28\, 2026\, this year’s call is broadly themed around boundaries\, interpreted in the widest sense. We welcome exhibition submissions from individual and two-person artist groups to apply. As a national organization\, Tiger Strikes Asteroid is committed to highlighting the breadth and range of artists within our community\, and encourages historically underrepresented perspectives and viewpoints to apply. All applicants will be considered for future programming in our space\, with finalists being notified. \nThis cycle\, we are interested in hosting exhibitions that address contemporary themes of boundaries. Boundaries can be physical\, emotional\, cultural\, social\, political\, personal\, geographical\, material\, formal\, and more. As a framework\, we hope to showcase how boundaries shape\, limit\, and transform. Proposals that speak to the theme will be prioritized\, and we welcome broad and unexpected interpretations. \nSubmission guidelines: \n– Open to artists over 18\, working in all mediums\, who are not currently enrolled in a degree-granting program. \n– A non-refundable submission fee of $30* for up to five images representative of work for the exhibition. \n– The selected artist will be juried by the members of TSA GVL. \n– All artwork submitted must be completed and ready to hang or install. \n– Submissions must be completed by the deadline for consideration. \nImportant Dates: \n– Deadline: October 10\, 2025 \n– Exhibition Dates: January 24 – February 28\, 2026 \n– Install Dates: January 13 – 23\, 2026 \n– Deinstall Dates: March 1 – 3\, 2026 \n– Artist Reception: First Friday\, February 6\, 2026\, 6 – 9 pm \n*Your submission fee directly contributes to the operating expenses for our volunteer-run non-profit art organization. DESCRIPTION:Art & Light Gallery is pleased to present “Golden”\, a solo exhibition of work by Emma Ballou (Buxton\, M.E.) launching on the Art & Light website and in the gallery at 10:00 AM (EST) on Tuesday\, September 30 with an opening reception on Friday\, October 3 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. \nWorking in acrylic and oil paint Emma Ballou captures the soft\, luminescent quality of light that she is most visually attracted to in the landscape. Ballou’s ethereal and moody paintings are influenced by her poor eyesight\, making her unique perspective of the world more about feeling than seeing. Her slightly-out-of-focus landscape paintings offer viewers an understanding of how light and dark shape our experience of the natural world. The work highlights the vivid\, fleeting details of the golden hour\, like the halos that outline blooming milkweed and queen anne’s lace and the sparkles of light that make individual blades of grass look like strands of gold. \nIn “Golden” Emma Ballou examines dusk\, which she considers “the most tender and flourishing time of day.” The word golden signifies a perfect middle ground\, a point of ideal balance. It is this intersection of light and dark\, this precise tipping point\, that creates a striking moment of clarity for the artist. Ballou states\, “When the day is done and starts slipping into night the golden hour appears. This normal daily occurrence has a surprising abundance of crescendo energy. Like the grand finale of a fireworks display on the fourth of July. But even as this golden moment starts you can sense its end. Day slides into night\, signaling that it’s finally time to rest and release the day’s energy so you can begin again tomorrow.”

SUMMARY:Mono no aware:  Photography by Leigh Mitchell
DESCRIPTION:Fall is a season of contrasts. The days begin with a chill\, foretelling the coming winter\, then closing with an afternoon of summer heat. We sweater-up in the morning to then shed a layer or two by lunch. We notice the trees are still green\, but that green is dull\, faded\, browning on the edges\, ready for winter rest. Mitchell’s photographs celebrate this seasonal contrast\, the natural cycles of birth and death\, and remind us of the fragility of these cycles. \nHer title\, Mono no aware is a Japanese phrase meaning “beauty tinged with sadness.” Mitchell states\, “More specifically it refers to the bittersweet awareness that all existence is ephemeral\, and every moment of life is short lived.” Nature’s ephemeral existence is not only the seasonal cycle but also the human sourced destruction of the natural cycle. Mitchell’s images of fall as beauty tinged with sadness conjure feelings … “of impending loss”…“feelings of vulnerability\, loss\, loneliness\, precariousness and foreboding.” She elaborates\, “Another translation for ‘mono no aware’ is ‘a sensitivity to things\,’ or noticing\, identifying with\, and having appreciation for things. As a result of this sensitivity\, a subtle ache accompanies the awareness that all things inevitably change form or come to an end. The transience of nature/of life/of reality makes it both haunting and precious.” \nMitchell often employed a Holga camera to record some of her landscapes. The Holga\, with limited control and range is plagued with imprecise outcomes not unlike humans attempts of dominion over the natural world with poor understanding of the long-range outcomes of those interventions. Mitchell applies the same methodical\, labor-intensive production in making digital ink jet prints from digital cameras as she does silver-gelatin prints from the Holga. By eliminating color\, she emphasizes the haunting beauty of these disappearing landscapes ravaged by society’s progress. \nLeigh Mitchell is an artist/educator. She holds a Master’s Degree in Studio Art from Western Carolina University. Her work has been exhibited at The Center for Fine Art Photography\, Fort Collins\, CO; the Rochester Contemporary Art Center\, Rochester\, NY; The Asheville Art Museum; and most recently\, in Greenville\, SC at The SE Center for Photography\, and at the Greenville Center for Creative Arts. DESCRIPTION:We Wiggle Dolls: On Tour! is a showcase for the puppet show collective “We Wiggle Dolls.” The collective grew from a popular Brooklyn puppet slam that started in October 2023. Since then\, We Wiggle Dolls has produced 10 Brooklyn slams\, an open mic\, longform showcases\, workshops\, and three national tours.\nThe Autumn Tour will feature two We Wiggle Dolls regulars\, a rotating cast of touring puppet performers filling the third spot alongside local puppet artists\, and musicians performing short interludes between acts. The show is about 100+ minutes and recommended for adults or minors aged 14+ accompanied by a guardian.\nThe primary goal of We Wiggle Dolls is to showcase as wide a variety of puppetry as possible\, acting as a comprehensive entry point for curious unfamiliar audiences as well as offering puppet aficionados something new.

DESCRIPTION:Artist Reception\nSaturday\, October 18th\, 3-6p \nArtist Talk\nSaturday\, October 18th\, 4-5p \nDerrick Beasley is an artist living in Durham\, NC. Beasley’s work includes sculpture\, photographic collage\, painting and social practice to immerse viewers in the speculative vision and material reality of the world he is designing. Beasley is a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University Sociology program and the Georgia State University Masters in Public Administration Program. He uses this background and his 20 years of experience as an organizer\, educator and his deep commitment to being in right relationship with the non-human world to shape his art practice and overall engagement with community. \nTiger Strikes Asteroid Greenville is excited to present: Surviving the Burn; Room to Breathe\, our next exhibition by Durham-based multidisciplinary artist Derrick Beasley. The exhibition explores a speculative future shaped by a reframed Black masculinity – one that exists in a deep\, reciprocal relationship with the non-human world. The exhibition explores a speculative future shaped by a reframed Black masculinity – one that exists in a deep\, reciprocal relationship with the non-human world. Spanning painting\, sculpture\, photography and film\, Beasley maps a future where people have embraced ways of being that challenge expected ideas of survival and identity. The exhibition asks – and answers – who survives “the burn” – and how communities adapt\, resist\, and thrive in its aftermath. These layered narratives intersect with contemporary social justice organizing efforts that operate from a world-building perspective. The work in this exhibition blends speculative technologies\, cultural artifacts\, and the persistence of Southern cultures\, encouraging viewers to rethink survival as transformation\, rooted in community\, history\, and care. \nDerrick Beasley is an artist living in Durham\, NC. Beasley’s work includes sculpture\, photographic collage\, painting and social practice to immerse viewers in the speculative vision and material reality of the world he is designing. Beasley is a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University Sociology program and the Georgia State University Masters in Public Administration Program. He uses this background and his 20 years of experience as an organizer\, educator and his deep commitment to being in right relationship with the non-human world to shape his art practice and overall engagement with community. \nThe exhibition was supported by TSA GVL member Sterling Bowen.
