SUMMARY:Michael Bauermeister: The Language of Wood
DESCRIPTION:Tryon Arts & Crafts School presents a major late-summer showcase celebrating the power\, texture\, and grain of regional and national woodwork. Headlined by master wood artist Michael Bauermeister\, this comprehensive exhibition brings together nationally recognized monumental sculpture alongside works by three premier TACS wood instructors and notable artisans from across the Blue Ridge and Foothills. \nMain Gallery: The Language of Wood by Michael Bauermeister\nThe Language of Wood presents a striking body of work exploring the dialogue between raw forest materials and human intention. Building on decades of studio practice in Missouri’s Ozark hills\, Bauermeister creates works from domestic hardwoods—primarily linden (basswood)\, walnut\, cherry\, and maple. \nRather than turning solid logs on a lathe\, Bauermeister meticulously laminates segments of hardwood lumber\, then hand-carves\, hollows\, and textures each piece using specialized hand tools and power-carving equipment. The results are imposing yet remarkably delicate sculptures that ripple\, wave\, and breathe. \nExhibition Highlights: \nMonumental Vessels: Tall\, segmented wood forms featuring flowing contour lines\, subtle dye applications\, and rhythmic carved surfaces. \nCarved Wall Reliefs: Multi-panel wall installations capturing the movement of wind\, water\, and geological strata through hand-carved channels and rich\, hand-applied patinas. \nSurface & Color: Milk paints\, dyes\, and oil finishes that accentuate and highlight underlying wood grain and tool marks. \nFeature Gallery: Fluid Form & The Foothills Wood Craft Showcase\nExhibiting in tandem with Bauermeister’s solo presentation\, two curated feature displays provide a regional context to the exhibition: \n1. Fluid Form: New Wood Instructors’ Spotlight\nHighlighting three studio woodworkers and TACS instructors: \nBrian Fireman: Merging an architectural background with a reverence for raw materials\, Fireman crafts fluid\, organic furniture and sculptural forms celebrating the natural character\, grain\, and live edges of local hardwoods. \nMark Gardner: Based in nearby Saluda\, NC\, Gardner is an internationally celebrated woodturner known for his clean\, mid-century-inspired vessel contours\, stepped rims\, and signature power-carved surface textures. \nWyatt Severs: A studio furniture maker specializing in both spindle turning and traditional green/hardwood joinery\, Severs presents pieces bridging clean functional design with hand-shaped sculptural details. \n2. Foothills Wood Craft Showcase\nA curated regional presentation celebrating both traditional and contemporary woodworking from talented craftspeople across the surrounding Foothills area\, celebrating local heritage alongside national studio masterworks. \nOpening Reception Details\nDate & Time: Thursday\, August 6\, 2026\, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM \nArtist Remarks: Brief opening remarks and Q&A at 6:15 PM \nHospitality: Refreshments and light bites served in the gallery and courtyard

SUMMARY:Painting\, once again
DESCRIPTION:Again\, It Is Painting is the artist’s first solo exhibition.\nHaving devoted her early life to studying and practicing fine art\, the artist’s life revolved entirely around painting. This path was interrupted by marriage and immigration\, which brought isolation and disconnection from familiar communities\, leaving language and belonging difficult to navigate.\nPainting became a space to reconnect with the world. For someone whose words often falter\, the canvas became a language of its own—figures\, animals\, and scenes speaking where words could not.\nThis exhibition marks a personal return to painting\, an act of re-engaging with the world through the medium itself.

SUMMARY:Here Today: Cassie Butcher and Jeremy Russell
DESCRIPTION:Art & Light Gallery presents Here Today an exhibition of work by Cassie Butcher (Asheville\, N.C.) and Jeremy Russell (Asheville\, N.C.) launching on the Art & Light website and in the gallery at 10am (EST) on Tuesday\, September 1 with an opening reception on Friday\, September 4 from 6:00 – 9:00 PM. \nCassie Butcher grew up in West Virginia and went to Berea College where she majored in Art and Psychology. Shortly after graduating\, she had the opportunity to go to the Penland School of Craft to study glaze chemistry. In March 2004\, Butcher was granted a resident artist position at Odyssey ClayWorks in Asheville\, N.C. where she continues to live and work today. She creates ceramic sculptures inspired by the way human beings relate to one another\, exploring human relationships and interactions. By stripping the figure of details that would lead to a specific identity\, she makes room for the viewer to create a personal reflective narrative and hopes to evoke a deeper sense of empathy. Butcher refers to these basic clay figures as “souls” because they touch on the essence of humanity\, rather than physical appearance or circumstance. In a world driven by individuality\, her sculptures remind viewers that we are not all that different at our core\, reconnecting us to each other through shared universal experience. For the exhibition Here Today\, the still\, contemplative nature of Cassie Butcher’s souls provides a moment of pause\, challenging viewers to fully enjoy and experience the moment they are currently in rather than rushing to the next thing. \nJeremy Russell\, an abstract expressionist landscape painter from Asheville\, N.C.\, received his BFA from the University of North Carolina\, Asheville. Prior to pursuing a full-time studio practice\, Russell established a robust technical foundation through his work as a muralist and a painter for theatrical sets\, cinematic productions\, and theme park attractions. His creative process investigates the inherent tension between chaos and structure. Russell’s landscape paintings dissolve the boundaries between abstract expressionism and tangible reality\, prioritizing the visceral sensation of a specific moment\, like the rush of a stream or the shift of light\, over a strictly representational rendering of the environment. In the Here Today exhibition Russell captures the experience of a specific\, passing moment by prioritizing the fleeting\, temporary nature of time\, light and feeling over static realism. By focusing on the movement of a stream or the shifting of light his paintings serve as a visual reminder of a precise time and place.

SUMMARY:Time Capsule: Erin Hughes and Liz Rundorff Smith
DESCRIPTION:Art & Light Gallery presents Time Capsule\, an exhibition of work by Erin Hughes (Anderson\, S.C.) and Liz Rundorff Smith (Greenville\, S.C.) launching on the Art & Light website and in the gallery at 10am (EST) on Tuesday\, September 29 with an opening reception on Friday\, October 2 from 6:00 – 9:00 PM. \nErin Hughes received a BA in Biology from James Madison University and an MA in Science Education from Boston University. Hughes began working with film photography in high school and started painting in 2015. Always motivated to learn and further her technical proficiency\, she honed her skills in the encaustic and oil painting mediums under the tutelage of artists like Lisa Pressman\, Mark Russell\, and Jeffrey Hirst. Hughes explores the connection between beauty and loss in her work. \nFor Hughes\, the encaustic work included in the Time Capsule exhibition explores our limited ability to retain fleeting visual experiences in the natural world. Because we can only hold onto fragmented details of a landscape\, we ultimately experience a deep sense of loss as time passes and we lose clarity. With the passage of time\, the memory of a place is expressed in fading light\, deep shadow\, and the layered\, obscured textures of the wax itself. \nLiz Rundorff Smith received a BA in Studio Art with a concentration in sculpture from the College of Wooster in Wooster\, OH\, and an MFA in Painting from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. She studied abroad at The Marchutz School of Painting in Aix-en-Provence\, France\, and the British Institute of Florence in Florence\, Italy and was later awarded a fellowship and residency at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts. Her work can be found in private and corporate collections\, including the Marilyn Monroe Bungalow at the Beverly Hills Hotel and Sun City Showa Kinen Koen in Tachikawa\, Japan. \nIn Time Capsule\, Rundorff Smith confronts the feeling of loss that accompanies physical deterioration and the uncomfortable reality of existing in an aging body. She processes this vulnerability by gathering paper scraps left over from her templates of vessel forms\, transforming discarded remnants into entirely new\, hybrid structures. By recycling fragments of paper that would usually be thrown away\, she shows that time and experience are never truly wasted. Ultimately\, the work centers on rebuilding\, framing her change in creative process as a continuous journey rather than a break from the past.

SUMMARY:Kim Hassold + Craig Ragsdale are “Side by Side” at the Neighborhood Cancer Connection
DESCRIPTION:The Neighborhood Cancer Connection Presents Side by Side: An Art Exhibition Featuring Kim Hassold and Craig Ragsdale\nArtists’ Reception: Thursday\, September 17\, 2026 | 5:30–7:30 p.m.
Exhibition Dates: September 17 – December 31\, 2026 \nThe Neighborhood Cancer Connection (NCC) is proud to present Side by Side\, a special exhibition featuring Greenville artists Kim Hassold and Craig Ragsdale. On view from September 17 through December 31\, 2026\, the exhibition celebrates the power of art\, community\, and compassion—reflecting Neighborhood Cancer Connection’s mission to walk side by side with individuals and families throughout the cancer journey. \nAbout the Artists\nThough distinct in style and medium\, Hassold and Ragsdale share a common ability to create deeply personal work that invites reflection\, hope\, and connection. Their exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to experience two unique artistic voices brought together by a shared belief in the transformative power of creativity. \nKim Hassold embraces a wide range of artistic media\, often creating her own painted papers to achieve the exact colors and textures her mixed-media compositions require. After a successful career in fashion and journalism\, she now devotes herself full-time to her studio practice at Art Crossing Galleries in downtown Greenville\, where her joyful\, layered work continues to inspire collectors and visitors alike. \nCraig Ragsdale’s paintings explore the space where observation\, memory\, and imagination intersect. His work transforms fleeting moments into enduring visual narratives\, inviting viewers to pause\, reflect\, and discover beauty beyond words. Through thoughtful compositions rooted in both personal experience and universal themes\, Ragsdale creates art that speaks to resilience\, legacy\, and human connection. \n“At the Neighborhood Cancer Connection\, we believe healing is strengthened through community\,” said Lisa Colby\, Executive Director of the NCC. “This exhibition beautifully reflects our mission of walking side by side with those facing cancer. Kim and Craig have each created work that encourages hope\, reflection\, and meaningful connection\, making Side by Side a fitting celebration of both art and compassion.” \nThe exhibition title carries multiple meanings: two artists exhibiting together\, artwork displayed side by side\, and the enduring commitment of the NCC to stand beside cancer patients\, survivors\, caregivers\, and families throughout every stage of their journey. \n“As curator\, I was drawn not only to the exceptional quality of Kim and Craig’s work\, but also to how naturally it echoes the mission of the Neighborhood Cancer Connection\,” said Emily M. Randolph\, Art Curator and Board Member of the NCC. “Their individual artistic voices complement one another in remarkable ways\, reminding us that while every journey is unique\, none of us has to walk it alone. Side by Side is ultimately a celebration of art’s ability to bring people together.” \nThe public is invited to attend the opening reception on Thursday\, September 17\, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Guests will have the opportunity to meet both artists\, enjoy refreshments\, learn more about the Neighborhood Cancer Connection’s programs and services\, and weather permitting\, enjoy the NCC’s beautiful Serenity Garden. Admission to both the reception and exhibition is free. \nThe Neighborhood Cancer Connection provides practical support\, educational resources\, and compassionate encouragement to individuals and families affected by cancer throughout the Upstate. Through exhibitions like Side by Side\, the organization continues to foster healing by connecting art and community. A portion of all proceeds from the exhibit will benefit The Neighborhood Cancer Connection. \nThe gallery is open to the public during NCC’s business hours: Mondays to Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (the office is closed daily for lunch from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.) and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
