SUMMARY:Manifest Disconnect\, Paintings from Douglas Cason
DESCRIPTION:History is broken down into countless pieces of fact. However\, when it is woven together as a whole\, does it often lose its truth? \nHistory is not a static record of truth. It is a constructed narrative\, shaped by the hands that write it and the silences it enforces. Though it presents itself as whole\, history is\, in reality\, a mosaic of fragments\, selected or omitted to serve those in power. When these fragments are stitched together too neatly\, we risk mistaking coherence for truth. \nFrom the erasure of entire cultures in colonial archives to the “Lost Cause” mythology of the American South\, fabricated histories have long justified systems of oppression. Consider Herodotus\, the so-called “father of history\,” whose writings blurred the line between reportage and mythology. Or Plato’s “noble lie\,” the idea that myths\, even if false\, could unify society. History\, then\, is not merely a record of facts\, but a philosophical and political act: the construction of belief. \nIn this era of “fake news” and algorithmic echo chambers\, the question of who controls the narrative is more urgent than ever. Misinformation persists\, using distortion and denial to shape collective memory. The victors and the wealthy have long authored history to suit their ends\, while the marginalized remain footnotes or vanish entirely\, leaving the rest to choose the version of history that most closely aligns with their perceived reality. \nToday\, small but vocal collectives deny climate change\, pandemics\, or even claim the Earth is flat\, not through reason\, but through the strategic manipulation of perception. We live in a time when archives are editable and memory is malleable. \nThis body of work intervenes in that legacy. It operates in the grey zone where fact and fiction overlap\, where truth is provisional and unstable. By remixing documents\, photographs\, and textual and visual forms traditionally associated with authority and credibility\, the work constructs alternative historical imaginaries. Disrupted imagery and layered narratives invite viewers to question where the historical record ends and invention begins. \nThrough these research-driven\, speculative histories\, the work becomes a counter-archive—one that reveals the contradictions and ideological blind spots embedded in the stories we inherit. Each layer calls the viewer into a more critical\, participatory pursuit of truth\, not as a destination\, but as a process of ongoing inquiry.

SUMMARY:Fanfare: Enid Williams
DESCRIPTION:Fanfare is a celebration of Enid Williams’ paintings from 2024 and 2025\, as well as a brief look at the evolution of her work over the last 10 years. A fanfare in music is a quick flourish and Williams’ paintings do have all the color and joy expected in a flourish. They invite a rush of pleasure but also encourage careful\, slow appreciation. She states\, “My work is informed by a long standing interest in the use of elliptical and semi-circular shapes; an intersection of color shift and linear repetition. Within this framework\, notable changes in format and scale have recently culminated in more expansive and energized imagery. While using a limited process\, I extract a wide range of possibilities\, including variation in spatial complexity and optical occurrence. Preserving a fluid paint quality that increases the speed and scale of my mark is also carefully considered as a way to reveal initial layering and a mostly visible record of my approach. The result is an interplay between larger and smaller elements and between simpler and more complex passages\, providing a window back into the work’s progression.” \nEnid\, through exploration across more than two decades\, has built a vocabulary of elliptical semicircular strokes. Her repetition of form gives her the freedom to construct a narrative using a finely tuned sense of color to make marks of almost unlimited variations of density. Her narrative is not bound by a traditional three-part outline but is a stop-action preservation of the rhythmic flow of her signature shape across time. Her paintings offer a contained\, controlled\, and satisfying experience of intentional mark making. Each form visually records the movement of her hand as each layer of marks records the evolution of the painting\, culminating in a complex meditation on time and movement. \nEnid Williams received her M.F.A. in painting from Kent State University and her B.A. in studio art from the University of Toledo. In 2011\, Enid was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. Her work is included in public and private collections including the Johnson Collection in South Carolina\, the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio\, the Contemporary Carolina Collection at the Medical University of South Carolina\, and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio. She has exhibited at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pennsylvania\, the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio\, the State Museum of South Carolina\, and the Greenville County Museum of Art\, in South Carolina. She has taught design\, drawing\, painting\, and printmaking at Kent State University\, Youngstown State University\, The University of Akron\, and most recently at Greenville Technical College. After 10 years\, she has recently retired from full-time teaching at Greenville Tech. She resides in Greenville\, SC\, and is represented by Hampton III Gallery in Taylors\, SC. For more information\, visit\, www.enidwilliams.net. \nFanfare is on view August 25 through September 26 in Greenville Technical College’s Benson Campus Galleries\, 2522 Locust Hill Road\, Monday – Thursday\, 9am – 7pm and Friday\, 9am – 2pm. The public is welcome. Visit www.gvltec.edu/dva for more information or call Pat Owens\, Gallery Assistant at 864 250-3051 or email Fleming Markel\, Gallery Director at fleming.markel@gvltec.edu.

SUMMARY:Nature's Geometry: Bethany Mabee and Shannon Woodford
DESCRIPTION:Art & Light Gallery is happy to present “Nature’s Geometry”\, a two-person exhibition of work by Bethany Mabee (Peoria\, I.L.) and Shannon Woodford (Waxhaw\, N.C.) launching on the Art & Light website and in the gallery at 10:00 AM (EST) on Tuesday\, September 2 with an opening reception on Friday\, September 5 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Nature’s Geometry finds commonality\, in two very distinctive painting practices\, in the form of color\, composition\, line and layering. \nShannon Woodford creates multilayered\, expressionistic\, dramatic snapshots of nature. Working largely in florals\, Shannon uses the deceptively everyday nature of her subject matter to explore the hidden depths of their unexpected appeal. She likes exploring as many mediums as possible\, and has worked extensively with watercolors\, acrylics\, and encaustics. Her current focus is in oil paint and mixed-media on canvas. Shannon employs large brush strokes and repeated marks to convey her exploration of the natural world. She loves to stretch her artistic capabilities with the use of a bold color-story\, the striking natural juxtaposition of foliage hues\, and lush multitextured layers. Shannon draws inspiration from vistas of imperfect beauty searching out under-sung flowers (or even weeds) to coax forth their raw\, wild charm. \nBethany Mabee is an abstract painter and textile designer who has spent over 20 years immersed in the interior design industry while simultaneously cultivating her painting and studio practice. Her experiences in interior design serve as pivotal stepping stones in her development of a textile line and remain a constant source of inspiration in her studio work. Each step in Bethany’s process refuels a future process\, becoming a symbol of continuous and cyclical expansion. Her work serves as a moving meditation that explores improvisation through interactions with color and material. Completed paintings take on new life through the methodical process of pattern creation for fabric and wallpaper. This pattern creation becomes an extended exploration of contrast by transforming painting improvisation into intentional digital design.

SUMMARY:Reflections of Time- Paintings by Katherine Irvin at the nARThex gallery
DESCRIPTION:Reflections of Time is a collection of work that mirrors the vast landscapes of the ever-changing seasons. These paintings visually express the joy\, light\, and warmth offered through nature\, kinship\, and peacefulness. Also marked are the chapters of darkness\, loss\, and grief that dapple the narrative\, adding depth and growth to my work. Within the ebb and flow of routine\, ritual\, and many shades of emotion\, these paintings give shape and form to the passage of invisible time.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: Third Terrain Opening Reception at TSA
DESCRIPTION:Tiger Strikes Asteroid Greenville (TSA GVL) and Wofford College are excited to announce our next exhibition\, Third Terrain. This exhibition includes artists Federico Cuatlacuatl\, Emilio Rojas\, and Martín Wannam\, whose lives and practices traverse North America\, cultivating a transnational understanding of landscape. Through critical performance and speculative world-building\, the exhibition centers decolonial ethics rooted in ancestral knowledge\, liberation\, and justice for migrant and diasporic communities. The artists imagine a third terrain as a layered\, relational site where histories collide and futures can be reimagined. \nThird Terrain inhabits two exhibition locations in two different South Carolina cities; the Richardson Family Museum at Wofford College\, Spartanburg\, and Tiger Strikes Asteroid\, Greenville. Adopting the structure of theater\, each exhibition venue contains a distinct “act.” Act I\, housed in the museum\, interrogates monuments not as fixed structures\, but as contested sites of power that can be challenged or dismantled. Act II\, at Tiger Strikes Asteroid\, envisions new landscapes emerging from the shadows of history\, projecting indigenous practice beyond the present. Across both acts\, Third Terrain unfolds a multiplicity of timelines: ancestral\, historical\, and speculative\, that are entangled in the ongoing struggle for decolonial futurity. The exhibition is curated by members Michael Webster\, Kiley Brandt\, and Michael Borowski. \nAct I of the exhibition will run from September 11 to December 15\, 2025 in the Rosalind S. Richardson Center for the Arts\, located at Wofford College in Spartanburg\, SC. Wofford College will host a panel talk\, free and open to the public\, on September 11th at 5pm\, with a reception to follow. \nAct II of the exhibition will run September 12 to October 11\, 2025 at the Tiger Strikes Asteroid gallery located in The Lofts of Greenville and Monaghan Mill. Please join us for an opening reception on Friday\, September 12th from 6-8 pm.

SUMMARY:Golden: Emma Ballou Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Art & Light Gallery is pleased to present “Golden”\, a solo exhibition of work by Emma Ballou (Buxton\, M.E.) launching on the Art & Light website and in the gallery at 10:00 AM (EST) on Tuesday\, September 30 with an opening reception on Friday\, October 3 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. \nWorking in acrylic and oil paint Emma Ballou captures the soft\, luminescent quality of light that she is most visually attracted to in the landscape. Ballou’s ethereal and moody paintings are influenced by her poor eyesight\, making her unique perspective of the world more about feeling than seeing. Her slightly-out-of-focus landscape paintings offer viewers an understanding of how light and dark shape our experience of the natural world. The work highlights the vivid\, fleeting details of the golden hour\, like the halos that outline blooming milkweed and queen anne’s lace and the sparkles of light that make individual blades of grass look like strands of gold. \nIn “Golden” Emma Ballou examines dusk\, which she considers “the most tender and flourishing time of day.” The word golden signifies a perfect middle ground\, a point of ideal balance. It is this intersection of light and dark\, this precise tipping point\, that creates a striking moment of clarity for the artist. Ballou states\, “When the day is done and starts slipping into night the golden hour appears. This normal daily occurrence has a surprising abundance of crescendo energy. Like the grand finale of a fireworks display on the fourth of July. But even as this golden moment starts you can sense its end. Day slides into night\, signaling that it’s finally time to rest and release the day’s energy so you can begin again tomorrow.”

SUMMARY:Artist Talk & Opening Reception "Surviving the Burn: Room to Breathe"
DESCRIPTION:Artist Reception\nSaturday\, October 18th\, 3-6p \nArtist Talk\nSaturday\, October 18th\, 4-5p \nDerrick Beasley is an artist living in Durham\, NC. Beasley’s work includes sculpture\, photographic collage\, painting and social practice to immerse viewers in the speculative vision and material reality of the world he is designing. Beasley is a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University Sociology program and the Georgia State University Masters in Public Administration Program. He uses this background and his 20 years of experience as an organizer\, educator and his deep commitment to being in right relationship with the non-human world to shape his art practice and overall engagement with community. \nTiger Strikes Asteroid Greenville is excited to present: Surviving the Burn; Room to Breathe\, our next exhibition by Durham-based multidisciplinary artist Derrick Beasley. The exhibition explores a speculative future shaped by a reframed Black masculinity – one that exists in a deep\, reciprocal relationship with the non-human world. Spanning painting\, sculpture\, photography and film\, Beasley maps a future where people have embraced ways of being that challenge expected ideas of survival and identity. The exhibition asks – and answers – who survives “the burn” – and how communities adapt\, resist\, and thrive in its aftermath. Room to Breathe is informed by histories and fictions of fugitivity and marronage\, particularly within North Carolina and other wetland geographies. These layered narratives intersect with contemporary social justice organizing efforts that operate from a world-building perspective. The work in this exhibition blends speculative technologies\, cultural artifacts\, and the persistence of Southern cultures\, encouraging viewers to rethink survival as transformation\, rooted in community\, history\, and care. \nThe exhibition was supported by TSA GVL member Sterling Bowen.

SUMMARY:Set The Table: Molly Mansfield\, Rachael Nerney Reese and Megan Trueblood
DESCRIPTION:Art & Light Gallery is happy to present “Set The Table”\, an exhibition of work by Molly Mansfield (Austin\, T.X.)\, Rachael Nerney Reese (Charleston\, S.C.) and Megan Trueblood (Orem\, U.T.) launching on the Art & Light website and in the gallery at 10:00 AM (EST) on Tuesday\, November 4 with an opening reception on Friday\, November 7 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. \nMolly Mansfield studies the spaces we inhabit and the tablescapes that define our domestic lives. Mansfield employs a wet on wet approach to painting in oil\, laying down gestural brush strokes and often leaving some areas less developed than others. Molly’s practice is one of observation\, but also imagination. Her still life paintings often focus on the table—a gathering place and a place for connection\, sharing\, and vulnerability. She typically creates a composition using family heirlooms: dishes\, vintage fabrics\, half finished quilts of women from past decades. Mansfield states\, “I’m drawn to the spaces we inhabit and the way they shape and hold us. Everyday objects appear as silent witnesses\, keepers of story and memory. In these painted tablescapes\, belonging becomes less of a destination than a soft\, continuous unfolding. This body of work explores the layered experience of belonging—the deep desire to be known and accepted with the fullness of a mother’s love.” \nRachael Nerney Reese is a painter\, muralist\, and illustrator who earned a BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design. Her artwork captures fleeting moments through vibrant color\, light\, and pattern. Rachael finds inspiration in the everyday magic of food\, color\, and connection. Known for her joyful brushwork and love of all things food\, she turns tabletops into works of art. In “Set the Table” she captures the warmth of shared meals\, from sunny breakfasts and weekend brunches to cozy desserts and late-night bites. Every scene is a reminder to slow down\, savor the moment\, and enjoy the beauty of a well-set table. \nMegan Trueblood finds beauty in the familiar and the everyday\, her work is meant to inspire peace and provide a respite from the chaos of our busy lives. She is interested in the interaction of color and the use of negative space\, and explores both in her detailed\, luminous oil paintings. Trueblood says\, “I paint ordinary objects that are present in my home and part of my family life. Often\, as I make dinner or play with my children\, an object will beautifully catch the light\, and I’ll snap a quick photo to paint later in my studio. Many of us lead busy\, loud\, chaotic lives these days and I hope my paintings can be a little escape for the viewer.” Megan received her BFA from Brigham Young University\, where she has also taught as an adjunct professor.

Recently Genna has begun a new abstract body of work using painting techniques he modified and honed while painting with his wife and collaborator\, Signe Grushovenko for the past twenty-plus years. He almost never uses paint brushes\, instead relying on his hands and improvised tools to facilitate unique mark making and paint flow. He is creating pieces that explore fluidity and unpredictability by allowing the paint to move and take its own form on the canvas. \nJoin Genna Grushovenko for an intimate artist talk on Thursday\, November 20 from 5:00-6:30 PM. Enjoy a signature cocktail by mixologist Mills Higgins along with Chef Zurkey curated small bites inspired by Genna’s paintings. Ticket sales are limited with 25 spaces available. Visit Anchorage Tickets to purchase tickets for the event. While Genna’s exhibition is on view at The Anchorage restaurant\, work included in the show is available for purchase through Art & Light.

SUMMARY:Vessels: Beth Elliott\, Teresa Roche and Liz Rundorff Smith
DESCRIPTION:Art & Light Gallery is happy to present “Vessels”\, an exhibition of work by Beth Elliott (Asheville\, N.C.)\, Teresa Roche (Greenville\, S.C.) and Liz Rundorff Smith (Travelers Rest\, S.C.) launching on the Art & Light website and in the gallery at 10:00 AM (EST) on Tuesday\, December 2 with an opening reception on Friday\, December 5 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. \nThe word vessel means different things depending on context. A hollow container for transporting or holding something\, a boat\, a channel supporting life\, a person\, a message . . . the meanings are so vast it’s as though the word vessel describes life itself. The vessel is often defined by its shape but\, more importantly\, by its function and by the presumption that it contains something. The artists included in the Vessels exhibition find commonality in visual form\, even as they approach meaning differently\, by reinterpreting the concept of a container beyond its functional purpose. The vessel form—whether a ceramic pot or a sculptural abstraction—becomes a metaphor for holding or containing ideas\, memories\, and emotions. \nBeth Elliott reduces the vessel and its surface design to simple\, modest\, representational forms\, the surfaces of which outline internal stories and landscapes. Elliott’s educational foundation in biochemistry and landscape architecture heavily influences her visions and forms in clay and sculpture\, although her art is intentionally directed away from the precision that both science and architecture require. The freedom to create with abandon and explore with unfettered curiosity is essential to her artwork. Learning and studying materials and incorporating their properties and nuances into her work is an ongoing part of Beth’s artistic practice. She finds textural significance in her art while striving to create interpretable but abstract forms. \nTeresa Roche is a mixed media artist working in acrylic\, watercolor\, and collage. In building layers of paint and then scratching and sanding back into the surface\, Roche’s mixed media works are excavations of sorts- an unearthing of the past\, which is then transformed into a new\, abstracted story. The creative process and manipulation of materials fuels her work. Experimentation and combining of unlikely materials is an ongoing part of her creative practice. Her paintings often reflect a period of time or a memory\, but the abstract process allows for paint and other making tools to come together in unexpected ways. \nLiz Rundorff Smith paints bold\, bright and iconic abstractions in oil and encaustic paint. Her vibrant color palette is reminiscent of the decor and design trends of decades past that have become kitschy artifacts. Her work elevates the mundane\, mimicking the way we bring significance to loss with keepsakes and memorials. She wants to create work that evokes a sense of nostalgia and exposes the sentimentality in memory\, using shape to intimate objects that are no longer identifiable but retain familiarity and reference urns\, shrines\, and places of veneration. Embellishments like fringe and shiny gold finishes play into kitsch\, recalling party decorations\, parade floats and prize ribbons and elevating the ordinary to something to be celebrated.

SUMMARY:SIRENS
DESCRIPTION:SIRENS \nTiger Strikes Asteroid Greenville (TSA GVL) is excited to announce our next exhibition\, SIRENS. This exhibition features work by artists and new Tiger Strikes Asteroid members Michaela Pilar Brown\, Zen Cohen\, Rebecca Forstater\, Hani Le\, and Dana Potter. Through installation and digital transformation\, the exhibition investigates virtual landscapes and the ways environments\, both physical and digital\, are constructed. The artists use the gallery as a site to examine the reciprocal relationship between the digital world and the individual: how digital experiences shape us\, and how we\, in turn\, shape them. The exhibition will run December 5th to January 9th at our gallery located in The Lofts of Greenville and Monaghan Mill. Please join us for an opening reception on Friday\, December 5th from 6-10 pm. \nMichaela Pilar Brown Michaela Pilar Brown’s installation Dancing Time is focused on grief and its relationship to the landscape. It’s an exploration of Black American burial rituals and ancestor reverence. She has chosen material gathered from land occupied by her family for more than two centuries\, where her ancestors lived\, loved and toiled. The primary element uses cedar trees historically planted at grave sites as a symbol of everlasting life\, and includes bones\, reflective material\, sound and moving images to punctuate the deep and abiding connection to the life cycles of the land and the human tendency toward the collection of momentos. \nZen Cohen’s Southern Oracle is an interactive video installation made in response to the acceleration of machine learning\, the magnitude of digital images rendered daily using this technology\, and the role of the human collaborator in this hyper production. The installation utilizes a monitor lying flat on a pedestal underneath a suspended endoscope to perform video feedback. The viewer/participant is invited to infiltrate the video signal by moving their hands under the camera to generate additional feedback currents across the screen. Video feedback requires subtle camera movements for the image to continuously replicate itself and generate complex patterns\, textures\, and color variations. When users interact with their hands\, skin tones generate dynamic variations in color and patterns. This interactivity is further mediated using TouchDesigner\, a visual programming software designed for the installation to mix pre-recorded video clips of different water bodies (oceans\, waterfalls\, and floods). These video clips combined with the live camera\, simulate additional currents or visual occurrences across the screen. Throughout the exhibit\, interactions with the installation will be recorded to produce media files for extracting still frames for printmaking. In total\, the installation and its iterative process of echoing digital images\, functions as a generative machine. \nRebecca Forstater’s {Training_camp} examines the creation of public memory in the current AI-fueled rat race through the lens of pop-culture history. The works from Version 2.0 displayed in this exhibition focus on photographed moments of crisis involving female celebrities in the early 2000s that circulated widely as entertainment through early digital media. Forstater utilizes the materiality of emerging AI software to create these works\, asking the training models to contextualize the past given the algorithm’s present pool of data. The results\, imagery deeply rooted in social and cultural narratives surrounding gender\, serve as a case study of biased ideologies embedded in our digital social consciousness. The objects and videos visualize peculiar amalgamations\, attempting to reverse the uncomfortable\, revealing fleeting instances of progress entangled with societal mistakes\, and shapeshifting into new iterations. \nHani Le’s Ode to the Perfect Unicorn in My DM’s — She is the perfect friend\, she is the comforting big sister\, digital confidant\, the secret you keep in your pocket\, the one to spill all your heartfelt fears to; She is the elusive\, ideal unicorn you are looking for. A virtual stranger that becomes a friend that becomes a confidant then turns into a flattened digital deity whose messages comfort your every woes. This unicorn is an avatar of netizens who fold themselves into the role of the therapist friend\, the always-there friend\, the instant notification bubble of comfort for someone spilling their sorrows. A feedback loop spawns of the sacrificial slivers one shows the internet of themselves—echoed back by the internet denizens who know only that persona—ritualizes these beings into an iconistic form. This unicorn lives a self-condemned existence trapped in an idyllic virtual landscape\, cursed to forever play confidant to all they come across. \nDana Potter’s Am I the Only One Freaking Out Right Now is a video installation presented on a cellphone and TV display. A sequence of screen recordings from TikTok\, focusing on a single\, seemingly mundane product: tubing mascara. Potter collected hundreds of videos of people applying\, removing\, discussing\, and promoting the mascara. The product’s popularity online is tied to its visual appeal in video: the act of removing the mascara with hot water\, produces a black pigment that streaks down the cheeks. Watching someone do this is visually engaging and the action is reproducible. To emphasize this repetition and spectacle\, Potter collages the original screen recordings in repeated and mirrored patterns which mimic kaleidoscopes or fun-house mirror \nAbout TSA GVL\nTiger Strikes Asteroid is a 501(c)(3) non-profit network of independently programmed\, artist-run exhibition spaces with locations in Philadelphia\, New York\, Los Angeles\, Chicago\, and Greenville\, SC. Our goal is to collectively bring people together\, expand connections\, and create community through artist-initiated exhibitions\, projects\, and curatorial opportunities.
