SUMMARY:Art & Light | Anchorage Exhibition Series: Gretta McCall
DESCRIPTION:Art & Light Gallery and The Anchorage Restaurant are pleased to announce the inaugural exhibition in their 2026 partnership series. A solo exhibition featuring work by local Greenville\, S.C. artist Gretta McCall will be on view at The Anchorage in the Village of West Greenville from January 6 to April 7\, 2026. The Anchorage Exhibition Series brings art beyond the walls of Art & Light Gallery to offer an immersive experience that fuses culinary and visual arts at The Anchorage Restaurant. \nGretta McCall’s paintings explore the complex interplay between ourselves and the natural world\, moving fluidly between abstraction and recognizable subject matter. Her process begins with an immersive “drawing expedition” into nature. These explorations result in quick\, expressive studies of compelling landscapes and forms\, which then serve as the source material for her paintings. Her work is driven by the desire to express emotion with the medium\, utilizing a love of color to explore endless possibilities and relationships. McCall states\, “The landscape has become the subject for exploration because nature has been my refuge\, solace and companion since I was a child. Each painting must have a distinct voice. Through the painting process I become aware of the deep places within me that are becoming a part of the painting. Life demands that we embody joy and sorrow simultaneously. Therefore\, I seek to reflect this in my work”. \nJoin Gretta McCall for an intimate artist talk on Thursday\, February 12 from 5:00-6:30 PM. Enjoy a signature cocktail by mixologist Mills Higgins along with Chef Zurkey curated small bites inspired by Gretta’s paintings. Ticket sales are limited with 25 spaces available. Visit The Anchorage to purchase tickets for the event. While Gretta McCall’s exhibition is on view at The Anchorage restaurant\, work included in the show is available for purchase through Art & Light Gallery. \nEXHIBITION DETAILS\nGretta McCall Solo Exhibition January 6 – April 7\, 2026\nArtist Talk: Thursday\, February 12 | 5 – 6:30pm The Anchorage Restaurant\, 586 Perry Ave.\, Greenville\, SC 29611

SUMMARY:Ascension
DESCRIPTION:Tryon Arts & Crafts School announces the exhibition Ascension by Jennifer Bueno\, Kit Paulson\, and Kimberly Thomas\, which will run from January 13 through February 15\, 2026. The exhibit coincides with the school’s annual fused glass symposium\, FuseFest (February 13 to 15)\, and culminates in a closing reception and artist panel on Friday\, February 13\, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm.\nThe exhibition explores the essential thresholds between the seen and the unseen\, with each artist using glass to articulate the theme of ascension. Through their distinct practices\, the artists propose that true ascension is not only flight or physical escape from a fragile planet\, but fundamentally a transformation of consciousness—a radical shift toward heightened perception\, empathy\, and possibility.\nFor Jennifer Bueno\, this ascension begins with the physical environment and stretches outward into space. Her luminous glass and painted forms translate the felt\, intimate bond between the body and its environment into ethereal\, suspended spaces. Through the synthesis of glass and evocative media\, Bueno makes visible the invisible energies that sustain life\, urging viewers toward an elevation of awareness rather than an abandonment of Earth. Her surfaces suggest an ecology of spirit\, where the boundary between self and atmosphere dissolves.\nKimberly Thomas propels that ascent inward and psychologically. Through kinetic flameworked and mixed-media sculptures that merge realism with dark fantasy\, she examines the human desire to transcend corruption\, fear\, and societal constraint. Her works visually capture the chaotic\, fierce struggle required for deep personal change. In her universe\, ascension is rebellion—a necessary\, creative act of shedding imposed forms. She asks what it means to evolve beyond the corrupting weight of human constraint.\nWith Kit Paulson\, ascension takes on an intellectual and spiritual precision. Her intricate glass constructions recall instruments of measurement\, flight\, and ritual\, merging scientific curiosity with mythic longing. Her works operate like precise\, visual diagrams of transcendence—the fragile\, complex systems of knowledge and inner life. Through meticulous craftsmanship\, Paulson makes visible the delicate balance between containment and release\, the body and the infinite.\nTogether\, these three artists imagine what it means to rise—emotionally\, philosophically\, and cosmically—from a planet in crisis. In Ascension\, escape is not avoidance but an evolution.

SUMMARY:Greenville Technical College's 34 Awards

Denise took a day out of her busy schedule to view all the entries and choose works that comprised VAASE including 34 Awards now on view. She stated\, “I’ve seen many artworks over the years\, and I’ve always been impressed with the quality of work being produced by Greenville Tech students. The tradition of excellence within Greenville Tech’s Department of Visual Arts is widely known!!” \nThe Department of Visual Arts at Greenville Tech offers associate degrees and certificates in fine arts\, graphic design\, photography\, and web design. Greenville Tech’s DVA graduates are highly sought after by local advertising firms\, professional photographers\, and regional universities. 34 Awards showcases DVA’s varied curriculum: ceramics\, design & color\, digital imagery\, drawing\, graphic design\, photography\, typography\, and web design. SUMMARY:BLU Time: Ceramics by Deighton Abrams
DESCRIPTION:Deighton Abrams’ Artist Talk on Thursday\, February 19 at 2pm as a closing for his exhibition BLU Time. \nBLU Time is disorienting by design. The first gallery or “Black Room” is organized to call to mind a cabinet of curiosities. Finely crafted lustrous black vessels sport crude\, other-worldly attachments that resemble familiar objects but are intentionally indistinct. In contrast\, other black vessels are fabricated as unrefined\, vaguely familiar forms. The vessels are tightly gathered in a nightmarish but playful grouping intended to mimic our current absurd politics and environmental corruption. \nThe second room or “Blue Room” continues the exploration of “our current predicament” with increased emphasis on spiritual/landscape narratives. Deighton explains\, “Through sculptural scenes\, I explore the anxieties and disillusionment born from a landscape of political turmoil and ecological crisis.” Deighton’s material choices of cheap lumber\, ubiquitous pink insulation board are all intentional environmental symbols. He contrasts these basic building materials with the preciousness of clay embellished with delicate brushwork that records his symbolic clouds and indistinct landscapes. The spirituality of BLU Time culminates in “Autonomy Stone and Altar” as it commands the end wall of the “Blue Room” surrounded by niche sculptures. There is no spiritual peace in BLU Time only unsettling\, off kilter\, fore shadowing that portend no catharsis. \nDeighton is a ceramic sculptor and educator. He is currently a lecturer in art at Auburn University. He completed his MFA in Studio Ceramics at Clemson University and his undergraduate studies Magna Cum Laude at Armstrong University (now Georgia Southern University) in Savannah\, Georgia. Though originally from Alaska\, he has spent an equal amount of time in the South including Georgia\, Texas\, and South Carolina. He has shown work both nationally and internationally. Thank you\, Deighton\, for not only delivering your work but also generously coming to GTC to give a Gallery Talk on February 19. \nBLU Time is on view now through February 19 in the Department of Visual Arts\, Greenville Technical College. The Benson Campus Galleries at 2522 Locust Hill Road are open to the public Monday – Thursday\, 9am – 7pm and Friday\, 9am – 2pm.
