SUMMARY:Handmade Baskets & Prongs
DESCRIPTION:In this course\, intermediate to advanced silversmithing students will be introduced to the technical aspects of both creating their own basket settings and prong setting faceted stones. Students will have the opportunity to practice and develop their own personal skills in basket fabrication and in prong setting stones. Skills learned can be applied to all future projects. \nNOTE: The goal of this class is strictly technical. Students will not focus on making a ‘final piece’ in this workshop\, rather\, they will focus intently on developing the skills to effectively and accurately create custom baskets. Students who have never prong set will also practice this separately. \nThe cost of this class does not include the cost of silver. Students can bring their own faceted stone (round or oval) that are at least 9mm in size. If students don’t have their own stones\, Katie will have some inexpensive practice stones to choose from on site. \n*If advanced students have a project near completion they would like to make a setting for\, they are encouraged to bring this with them to assemble and finish. Examples would be a bracelet\, pendant\, or ring with all other features already fabricated. Please don’t plan to make a piece AND a setting in this class — there simply will not be time. \nPrerequisite: Some prior silversmithing experience is helpful\, including proficiencies in sawing\, soldering\, and bezel setting.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Portrait Painting in Oils

Students will work step by step through the traditional process of building a portrait\, beginning with drawing and progressing from an underpainting through glazing to final touches. By the end of this course\, each participant will create a portrait while developing a deeper understanding of structure\, form\, and color. \nCourse Outline: \nWeek 1: Drawing & Structure of the Head\nLearn the foundations of portrait drawing\, focusing on proportion\, placement\, and the anatomy of the head and face. This week will be spent with graphite and charcoal. We will look at some examples from Art History to see how portrait painting was approached throughout art history. \nWeek 2: Beginning the Grisaille\nStart the monochromatic underpainting to establish composition\, form\, and tone. \nWeek 3: Refining the Grisaille\nContinue developing the grisaille\, closing forms and clarifying structure to create a strong foundation for color. \nWeeks 4–6: Glazing & Opaque Layers\nIntroduce transparent glazes and opaque layers of paint to build depth\, luminosity\, and naturalistic skin tones. Explore how light moves across form\, refine mark-making techniques\, and discover how to create depth on a 2 dimensional surface. \nThroughout the course\, students will gain an understanding of the structure of the head and facial features\, learn practical tools for mixing a variety of skin tones\, and develop a repeatable process for future portrait projects. \nClass will meet on the following dates from 6 PM – 8:30 PM: 9/18\, 9/25\, 10/2\, 10/9\, 10/16\, 10/23 (If anyone needs to miss a class\, 10/30 is available for a makeup session.) \nCost: $300 for all 6 session or $55 per session if you need to miss one\n*Class participants will receive a discount on all other events for September/October. SUMMARY:Introduction to Oil Painting: Limited Palette
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Oil Painting: Working with the Zorn Palette \nDiscover the foundations of oil painting through the beauty and discipline of a limited color palette. This four-week course is designed for beginners and focuses on developing strong color mixing and painting skills using just a few carefully selected pigments\, made famous by the Swedish painter Anders Zorn. \nIn the first week\, students will learn to mix and organize colors by creating their own color wheel—building a deeper understanding of relationships between hues\, values\, and chroma. Over the following three weeks\, students will apply these principles to a simple still life painting\, exploring composition\, light\, and form while practicing brushwork and layering techniques. \nBy the end of the course\, students will have a solid grasp of color mixing\, painting preparation\, and oil painting fundamentals\, along with a still life that demonstrates their growing skill and confidence. \nNo prior experience required. All materials list provided upon request.

SUMMARY:Brushstrokes of Serenity: Japanese Ink Painting
DESCRIPTION:…A Journey in Japanese Sumi-e Ink Painting\nWe are lucky to host Ayako Miller\, a visionary artist who is an expert in Sumi-e\, traditional Japanese ink painting. In this method of black ink painting the practitioner attempts to express complex feelings and subjects with simple\, minimalistic black Sumi ink strokes. Derived from charcoal\, these simple Sumi ink strokes are the key to making an expressive\, yet tranquil painting. Sumi-e originated from Zen Art\, which Buddhist monks and Samurai used to meditate and develop discipline.\nWe will paint simple and fun subjects from nature\, such as fish\, plants\, animals\, and basic Japanese calligraphy. Students will learn the basic techniques including making ink\, brush strokes\, creating traditional and non-traditional subjects\, along with knowledge of the history and culture of this art form. Due to the nature of this art form\, even a participant who feels they have little artistic ability will be able to create beautiful works of art to bring home. \nLast time we hosted Ayako the entire class was blown away by the peaceful instruction and invitation to create beautifully simple art. \nDate: Saturday\, April 11\, 2026\nTime: 2:00pm-5:00pm\nCost: $95\, includes all instruction and supplies\nAges: Adults and Teens\nClass size is limited to 12 participants
