SUMMARY:Introduction to Oil Painting (Indirect Methods)
DESCRIPTION:Discover the exciting and unique properties of oil painting in this oil painting class designed for beginners and enthusiasts alike as we create a traditional still life painting. Students will be introduced to traditional indirect painting techniques\, taking a painting from a grisaille (monochromatic underpainting) through glazing and scumbling\, to a finished work. Students will leave with a painting\, as well as a basic understanding of this oil painting technique\, composition\, and color theory. \nDates: 8/7\, 8/14\, 8/21\, 8/28 \nWhat You’ll Learn: \nMaterials and Tools: What makes oil paint so special and different from other mediums? Why must a canvas be primed? Why should you not finger paint with oils (and why we do anyways)? \nBasic Techniques: Learn fundamental techniques of indirect oil painting\, starting from a grisaille (under painting) and moving to glazing (transparent washes of paint) and scumbling (opaque application of paint). \nComposition: Discover how to direct your viewer’s eye through placement of objects and colors in your painting. \nColor Theory: Understand the basics of color theory and how to create harmonious palettes in your paintings. \nPersonal Expression: Discover ways to express your unique artistic voice through the medium of oil paint. \nClass Format: \nThis hands-on course combines demonstrations\, practical exercises\, and individualized instruction to help you build confidence and proficiency in oil painting. We will examine still life paintings from art history and see how to use their techniques for our own works. \nWho Should Attend: \nThis class is perfect for beginners with no prior experience in oil painting and intermediate artists looking to build on their techniques. \nMaterials: \nA list of required materials will be provided upon registration.

SUMMARY:THRESHOLDS & BOUNDARIES: an exploration in art and life
DESCRIPTION:“Boundaries” is a common buzzword\, but what does it really mean? In this 3 hour\nworkshop\, we’ll explore the concept of boundaries as also thresholds\, liminal points\nwhere we can invite in as well as keep out. How do boundaries and thresholds help\nus\, or hold us back? How might your creative Muse respond? \nWe will use art and experience — our own and others’ — to investigate how to make\nuse of the concepts of boundaries and thresholds to effectively further our own\npractice of art and the art of living. This workshop will combine instruction\, artmaking\, reflection\, and discussion to help us explore these concepts. \nAt the end of the workshop\, students will have a deeper understanding of these\nconcepts\, and take away some actionable ideas for using them in the process of\ntheir lives and art. \nThis workshop is open to all\, especially those who value their creative spirits and\neither want to deepen their existing work or give life to their curiosity in the arts. A\nwelcome email with short materials list will be sent upon signing up. \nThis is the first in a series of short workshop-based sessions that will enhance your\ncreative practice. These workshops are appropriate for visual artists\, writers\,\nmusicians\, storytellers\, performers and really any human who finds creative\nintention plays a central role in their lives\, or who wants to increase their connection\nto their creative spirit.

Inspired by the works of the Dutch Masters\, Monica’s oil paintings are vibrant expressions of color and intricate storytelling. Her work evokes a sense of nostalgia\, intertwined with complex narratives. Admirers often liken her work to a collaboration between Norman Rockwell and Salvador Dali\, where the familiar meets the surreal. Her art can be seen in museums and at prestigious exhibits across the North and Southeastern United States. \nAbout Iversen’s current show at Good Art Co.: \n“Reflections: a Solo Exhibition of new work by Monica Iversen” at Good Art Co. invites people of all ages to explore memories\, rekindle childlike joy\, and smile their way through timeless stories brought to life through hyper-realistic paintings. Iversen invites viewers into a world where memory\, emotion\, and storytelling converge through the lens of childhood. Featuring a collection of oil paintings that spotlight vintage toys and children—primarily from the 1960s and earlier—this exhibition draws on the universal language of nostalgia to spark both joy and introspection.

SUMMARY:Handmade Baskets & Prongs
DESCRIPTION:In this course\, intermediate to advanced silversmithing students will be introduced to the technical aspects of both creating their own basket settings and prong setting faceted stones. Students will have the opportunity to practice and develop their own personal skills in basket fabrication and in prong setting stones. Skills learned can be applied to all future projects. \nNOTE: The goal of this class is strictly technical. Students will not focus on making a ‘final piece’ in this workshop\, rather\, they will focus intently on developing the skills to effectively and accurately create custom baskets. Students who have never prong set will also practice this separately. \nThe cost of this class does not include the cost of silver. Students can bring their own faceted stone (round or oval) that are at least 9mm in size. If students don’t have their own stones\, Katie will have some inexpensive practice stones to choose from on site. \n*If advanced students have a project near completion they would like to make a setting for\, they are encouraged to bring this with them to assemble and finish. Examples would be a bracelet\, pendant\, or ring with all other features already fabricated. Please don’t plan to make a piece AND a setting in this class — there simply will not be time. \nPrerequisite: Some prior silversmithing experience is helpful\, including proficiencies in sawing\, soldering\, and bezel setting.

SUMMARY:Drawn to Dusk: Lauren Leslie Solo Exhibition | Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss this intimate\, immersive artist talk with one of the South’s most talented emerging artists\, Lauren Leslie! Free refreshments provided. \nDRAWN TO DUSK at Good Art Co. presents detailed\, fascinating and surreal new graphite and charcoal drawings by Atlanta-based artist Lauren Lesley. This solo exhibition provides a quiet space of reflection and comfort\, featuring intimate\, carefully rendered images of childhood objects and collected keepsakes that explore how memories become emotional anchors in times of uncertainty. \nThe title DRAWN TO DUSK represents moments of transition\, like coming of age\, relocation\, grief\, and the unspoken tension of an increasingly fragile world in social\, environmental\, and emotional flux. During these moments\, nostalgia becomes both a gentle escape and a way to cope\, reconnect\, and safeguard the parts of ourselves we fear losing. Step close to experience the subtle textures and details where each pencil stroke honors what time changes\, preserves the trace of a moment\, and creates space for both memory and growth. \nSave the dates!: \nFirst Friday Official Opening Reception | Friday August 1st from 6pm-8:30pm \nArtist Talk and Reception | Thursday August 21st from 6:30pm-8:30pm \nLast Day to See The Show | Saturday September 13th\, 10am-6pm

SUMMARY:Ink and Ephemera: New Works by Stephanie Howard
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the public reception of the Grand Bohemian Gallery’s August exhibition “Ink and Ephemera\,” which features new works by Stephanie Howard! \nStephanie Howard was born in the Appalachian region of South Carolina and still resides in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Howard received her BFA in painting from Savannah College of Art and Design\, and later her Masters of Library and Information Science from the University of South Carolina. Her work has been exhibited widely in the Southeastern United States. Howard is inspired and influenced by outsider and folk art\, vintage photography and illustration\, as well as embroidery and quilting. When working\, she often thinks of her materials as fabric and thread instead of pen and paper. \n“Ultimately\, my art is a celebration of the human experience in all its complexity. It is a testament to the power of creativity to transcend the boundaries of time and space\, offering comfort and understanding in the face of life’s greatest mysteries. Through drawing\, I confront the obsessive thoughts related to pain\, fear\, joy\, beauty\, and existence\, embracing the passage of time as an integral part of what it means to be alive. \nIn my fine line ink work\, I embark on a journey of introspection and exploration\, delving into the intricate tapestry of time and its profound impact on our lives. I am fascinated with the elusive nature of time and our ever-evolving relationship with it. Through the delicate interplay of line and form\, I strive to evoke a sense of nostalgia and contemplation\, inviting viewers to reflect on their own relationship with time and the fleeting moments that define our existence. \nThe repetitive nature of compulsive drawing becomes a form of meditation on vulnerability\, transforming fear into acceptance and embracing the fleeting beauty of existence. By immersing myself in the process of creation\, I find refuge from the existential dread that often accompanies thoughts of impermanence. I can also create and channel protection and power. Through the act of drawing\, I reclaim a sense of agency and control\, transforming my anxieties into a source of creative energy and resilience.”

SUMMARY:Fanfare: Enid Williams
DESCRIPTION:Fanfare is a celebration of Enid Williams’ paintings from 2024 and 2025\, as well as a brief look at the evolution of her work over the last 10 years. A fanfare in music is a quick flourish and Williams’ paintings do have all the color and joy expected in a flourish. They invite a rush of pleasure but also encourage careful\, slow appreciation. She states\, “My work is informed by a long standing interest in the use of elliptical and semi-circular shapes; an intersection of color shift and linear repetition. Within this framework\, notable changes in format and scale have recently culminated in more expansive and energized imagery. While using a limited process\, I extract a wide range of possibilities\, including variation in spatial complexity and optical occurrence. Preserving a fluid paint quality that increases the speed and scale of my mark is also carefully considered as a way to reveal initial layering and a mostly visible record of my approach. The result is an interplay between larger and smaller elements and between simpler and more complex passages\, providing a window back into the work’s progression.” \nEnid\, through exploration across more than two decades\, has built a vocabulary of elliptical semicircular strokes. Her repetition of form gives her the freedom to construct a narrative using a finely tuned sense of color to make marks of almost unlimited variations of density. Her narrative is not bound by a traditional three-part outline but is a stop-action preservation of the rhythmic flow of her signature shape across time. Her paintings offer a contained\, controlled\, and satisfying experience of intentional mark making. Each form visually records the movement of her hand as each layer of marks records the evolution of the painting\, culminating in a complex meditation on time and movement. \nEnid Williams received her M.F.A. in painting from Kent State University and her B.A. in studio art from the University of Toledo. In 2011\, Enid was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. Her work is included in public and private collections including the Johnson Collection in South Carolina\, the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio\, the Contemporary Carolina Collection at the Medical University of South Carolina\, and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio. She has exhibited at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pennsylvania\, the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio\, the State Museum of South Carolina\, and the Greenville County Museum of Art\, in South Carolina. She has taught design\, drawing\, painting\, and printmaking at Kent State University\, Youngstown State University\, The University of Akron\, and most recently at Greenville Technical College. After 10 years\, she has recently retired from full-time teaching at Greenville Tech. She resides in Greenville\, SC\, and is represented by Hampton III Gallery in Taylors\, SC. For more information\, visit\, www.enidwilliams.net. \nFanfare is on view August 25 through September 26 in Greenville Technical College’s Benson Campus Galleries\, 2522 Locust Hill Road\, Monday – Thursday\, 9am – 7pm and Friday\, 9am – 2pm.
