SUMMARY:The Big Band Music of Joe Henderson
DESCRIPTION:If there will ever be a “Mt. Rushmore” for great modern tenor sax players\, there’s a strong case for Joe Henderson to be part of it. However\, Joe doesn’t have the same level of awareness as his fellow influential tenor sax giants John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter. And even for those who know of Joe\, few people know about his important big band leadership in the 1960s. \nThe Greenville Jazz Collective strives to present music consistent with its educational mission – to share music that needs to be heard. And so\, Music Director Shannon Hoover has assembled a program of music to shine a spotlight on Joe Henderson\, his compositions\, and specifically his big band music. Fronting the Greenville Jazz Collective Big Band and stepping into the giant shoes of Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone will be Matt Olson and Peter Dimery. \nThe program will feature three views of his music. The big band will play a few arrangements of Joe’s music by other arrangers\, showing how more current musicians look back on his great compositions and build upon them. Secondly\, because Joe was known especially for his small group playing (he played on almost 30 recordings in the years 1963-1968)\, we will feature a small group playing his tune Black Narcissus. \nBut the highlight will be the big band playing the five arrangements (that have been published and are available) played by his 1960’s big band\, some arranged by Joe Henderson himself! His 1960s band included the cream of the jazz world playing in New York at that time\, and along with Thad Jones/Mel Lewis\, Charles Tolliver\, and Duke Pearson blazed the path for the modern big band jazz played now. \nSimply put\, you won’t be able to hear a program of Joe Henderson’s important big band music this year in New York\, Chicago\, or (according to Google) anywhere else…except here in Greenville\, at Centre Stage Theatre on July 27 at 8pm. And if you miss it…it could be years before you could hear it live…anywhere.

SUMMARY:Manifest Disconnect\, Paintings from Douglas Cason
DESCRIPTION:History is broken down into countless pieces of fact. However\, when it is woven together as a whole\, does it often lose its truth? \nHistory is not a static record of truth. It is a constructed narrative\, shaped by the hands that write it and the silences it enforces. Though it presents itself as whole\, history is\, in reality\, a mosaic of fragments\, selected or omitted to serve those in power. When these fragments are stitched together too neatly\, we risk mistaking coherence for truth. \nFrom the erasure of entire cultures in colonial archives to the “Lost Cause” mythology of the American South\, fabricated histories have long justified systems of oppression. Consider Herodotus\, the so-called “father of history\,” whose writings blurred the line between reportage and mythology. Or Plato’s “noble lie\,” the idea that myths\, even if false\, could unify society. History\, then\, is not merely a record of facts\, but a philosophical and political act: the construction of belief. \nIn this era of “fake news” and algorithmic echo chambers\, the question of who controls the narrative is more urgent than ever. Misinformation persists\, using distortion and denial to shape collective memory. The victors and the wealthy have long authored history to suit their ends\, while the marginalized remain footnotes or vanish entirely\, leaving the rest to choose the version of history that most closely aligns with their perceived reality. \nToday\, small but vocal collectives deny climate change\, pandemics\, or even claim the Earth is flat\, not through reason\, but through the strategic manipulation of perception. We live in a time when archives are editable and memory is malleable. \nThis body of work intervenes in that legacy. It operates in the grey zone where fact and fiction overlap\, where truth is provisional and unstable. By remixing documents\, photographs\, and textual and visual forms traditionally associated with authority and credibility\, the work constructs alternative historical imaginaries. Disrupted imagery and layered narratives invite viewers to question where the historical record ends and invention begins. \nThrough these research-driven\, speculative histories\, the work becomes a counter-archive—one that reveals the contradictions and ideological blind spots embedded in the stories we inherit. Each layer calls the viewer into a more critical\, participatory pursuit of truth\, not as a destination\, but as a process of ongoing inquiry.

SUMMARY:Drawn to Dusk: Lauren Leslie Solo Exhibition | Official Opening
DESCRIPTION:DRAWN TO DUSK at Good Art Co. presents detailed\, fascinating and surreal new graphite and charcoal drawings by Atlanta-based artist Lauren Lesley. This solo exhibition provides a quiet space of reflection and comfort\, featuring intimate\, carefully rendered images of childhood objects and collected keepsakes that explore how memories become emotional anchors in times of uncertainty. \nThe title DRAWN TO DUSK represents moments of transition\, like coming of age\, relocation\, grief\, and the unspoken tension of an increasingly fragile world in social\, environmental\, and emotional flux. During these moments\, nostalgia becomes both a gentle escape and a way to cope\, reconnect\, and safeguard the parts of ourselves we fear losing. Step close to experience the subtle textures and details where each pencil stroke honors what time changes\, preserves the trace of a moment\, and creates space for both memory and growth. \nSave the dates!: \nFirst Friday Official Opening Reception | Friday August 1st from 6pm-8:30pm \nArtist Talk and Reception | Thursday August 21st from 6:30pm-8:30pm \nLast Day to See The Show | Saturday September 13th\, 10am-6pm

SUMMARY:"As Above\, So Below" by Moni Hill
DESCRIPTION:This collection draws on the lakes of Western North Carolina and the Upstate of South Carolina\, not just as landscapes\, but as quiet metaphors. Lakes reflect the world above while holding unseen depths below\, much like we reveal parts of ourselves while keeping other realms private and alive. These paintings invite viewers to consider that layered relationship between surface and depth\, nature and self\, and to see the natural world as a mirror for our own inner landscapes.

SUMMARY:Hetty the Piano Unveiling
DESCRIPTION:Please Play Me Pianos and Artist Erika DeRoberts will unveil Hetty the Public Piano in Fountain Inn on Friday\, August 1\, 2025. The BIG REVEAL will take place during the 7:30 p.m. intermission of the Sounds of Summer Concert in Commerce Park. Concert begins at 6:00 p.m. if you want to enjoy the free live music and festivities!\nErika donated her own family piano and has painted it in the theme of Aunt Het’s Cottage! It exudes small-town Southern charm with every last note! Aunt Het is a fictional character created by journalist Robert Quillen in the early 1900s. She was renowned for her quips and witticisms as she observed the goings-on in Fountain Inn\, and Hetty the Piano pays tribute to this matriarch who helped shape a generation.\nAfter the unveiling\, the piano will permanently reside in the beautiful breezeway outside Steam Coffee & Cream at 113 S. Main Street in Fountain Inn. Owners Erica and Chris Williams can’t want to hear the music created by locals and tourists\, and the former happens to be a talented pianist herself!

SUMMARY:FRANKIE BUILDS ANDROIDS Auditions
DESCRIPTION:Meet Frankie\, a brilliant but socially awkward student who can’t seem to connect with her classmates. When a group project goes awry\, Frankie devises an unconventional solution: she replaces all her classmates with android replicas\, each programmed to correct their flaws. What follows is a hilarious and unexpected string of events that challenges Frankie’s ideas of belonging and perfection. Featuring a modern synth-pop score\, this sci-fi musical comedy explores the ways we build narratives around one another and how a community where everyone is exactly the same is not a community at all.

SUMMARY:THRESHOLDS & BOUNDARIES: an exploration in art and life
DESCRIPTION:“Boundaries” is a common buzzword\, but what does it really mean? In this 3 hour\nworkshop\, we’ll explore the concept of boundaries as also thresholds\, liminal points\nwhere we can invite in as well as keep out. How do boundaries and thresholds help\nus\, or hold us back? How might your creative Muse respond? \nWe will use art and experience — our own and others’ — to investigate how to make\nuse of the concepts of boundaries and thresholds to effectively further our own\npractice of art and the art of living. This workshop will combine instruction\, artmaking\, reflection\, and discussion to help us explore these concepts. \nAt the end of the workshop\, students will have a deeper understanding of these\nconcepts\, and take away some actionable ideas for using them in the process of\ntheir lives and art. \nThis workshop is open to all\, especially those who value their creative spirits and\neither want to deepen their existing work or give life to their curiosity in the arts. A\nwelcome email with short materials list will be sent upon signing up. \nThis is the first in a series of short workshop-based sessions that will enhance your\ncreative practice. These workshops are appropriate for visual artists\, writers\,\nmusicians\, storytellers\, performers and really any human who finds creative\nintention plays a central role in their lives\, or who wants to increase their connection\nto their creative spirit.
