SUMMARY:Introduction to Indirect Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Discover the exciting and unique properties of oil painting in this introductory course designed for beginners and enthusiasts alike as we transform a reference photo into a compelling painting. Students will be introduced to traditional indirect painting techniques\, taking a painting from a grisaille (monochromatic underpainting) through glazing and scumbling\, to a finished work. Students will leave with a painting\, as well as a basic understanding of this oil painting technique\, composition\, and color theory. \nDates: 5/8\, 5/15\, 5/22\, 5/29 \nWhat You’ll Learn: \nMaterials and Tools: What makes oil paint so special and different from other mediums? Why must a canvas be primed? Why should you not finger paint with oils (and why we do anyways)? \nBasic Techniques: Learn fundamental techniques of indirect oil painting\, starting from a grisaille (under painting) and moving to glazing (transparent washes of paint) and scumbling (opaque application of paint). \nHow to turn your photo into a painting: Discover what kind of image makes a good reference photo and how to push your image past the limits of the photograph. \nColor Theory: Understand the basics of color theory and how to create harmonious palettes in your paintings. \nPersonal Expression: Discover ways to express your unique artistic voice through the medium of oil paint. \nClass Format: \nThis hands-on course combines demonstrations\, practical exercises\, and individualized instruction to help you build confidence and proficiency in oil painting. Each student will work from a photo that they bring in\, examining how photos can be used as references not as “masters.” What elements of the photo should be kept and what should be ignored? \nWho Should Attend: \nThis class is perfect for beginners with no prior experience in oil painting\, as well as artists looking to brush up on the basics. \nMaterials: \nA list of required materials will be provided upon registration. \nPrice: $200 for all 4 classes\, or $55 per class

SUMMARY:VHS Showing. Dark Water (2002)
DESCRIPTION:From the directer of Ringu (1998)\, Hideo Nakata\, Village Horror Screenings presents DARK WATER (2002). \n“Like taking a long slow drink of water and having it all go down the wrong pipe\, DARK WATER overflows with atmosphere until you’re literally drowning in it.” \n— Lance Schibi\, LETTERBOXD \nDripping faucets have never been so horrifying. Often overshadowed by the American remake starring Jennifer Connelly\, DARK WATER is one of the key Japanese movies from the early 2000s that redefined the cultural landscape of horror. Recently divorced\, Yoshimi moves into a new apartment with her daughter Ikuku. And that’s when some dripping water leads Yoshimi to discover a terrifying secret. Written and directed by the team behind RINGU\, DARK WATER doubles as a dreamy spookshow and a touching portrait of a woman’s journey in the face of difficulties. This movie is chilling\, stylized\, and beautiful\, and we love it. Even if it makes us never want to set foot near a bathtub again.

SUMMARY:Art of Thieves: Jazz fusion quartet
DESCRIPTION:Art of Thieves (AOT) is a jazz quartet originally assembled by Wheel Sessions host and drummer\, Kevin Korschgen. Built on a concept of shared leadership among its members\, each having a creative voice\, the ensemble looks to push musical boundaries. The band’s approach to making music instinctively combines many musical genres with jazz: rock and pop\, Latin\, African\, and avant-garde. With a current membership that includes tenor saxophonist Peter Dimery\, pianist Philip Howe\, bassist Nathan Lambertson\, and Korschgen on drums\, the quartet will emerge with a new sound at the Greenville jazz Festival … Duke Ellington famously said\, “The composition begins when the musicians are chosen”. \n https://youtu.be/3BSfpUE4OnQ \nhttps://youtu.be/NIZQbCnao5g

SUMMARY:Albert Einstein portrayed by Larry Bounds
DESCRIPTION:Bring lawn seating. Greenville Tech Barton Campus Outdoors.\nAlbert Einstein was the most influential physicist of the 20th century. His ideas fundamentally changed our understanding of the nature of the universe. Newton’s ideas of absolute space and time were upended by Einstein’s concept of space/time – a universe in which\, if there was no matter\, there would be no space and no time.\nScience fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke explained Einstein’s appeal this way\, “Einstein’s unique combination of genius\, humanist\, pacifist\, and eccentric made him accessible – and even lovable – to tens of millions of people.”\nEinstein was no ordinary international celebrity. Charlie Chaplin once explained to Einstein why the scientist was often welcomed with applause by saying\, “They cheer me because they all understand me\, and they cheer you because no one understands you.” But\, in truth\, Einstein was able to make his revolutionary ideas understandable to the most advanced scientists and\, albeit to a lesser degree\, the general public.

First come\, first served. Doors will open 45 minutes before show time. \nBabe Ruth is widely regarded as one of the greatest baseball players of all time\, even transcending baseball to become America’s first sports superstar. Known as “The Sultan of Swat” and “The Bambino\,” Ruth’s legendary career began as a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox before joining the New York Yankees and transforming into a home run-hitting outfielder. Ruth’s power and charisma revolutionized the game\, setting records with his prodigious home runs\, including a then-unprecedented 60 homers in the 1927 season. His larger-than-life personality\, combined with his on-field prowess captivated the nation in the Roaring Twenties and made him a national icon and one of the first true American celebrities. Ruth’s impact extended beyond baseball\, as he helped shape the modern sports industry and the concept of celebrity. DESCRIPTION:Seating is limited and available on a first-come\, first-served basis. Come early to get a seat. Having figured out from her own personal experience that if you can laugh at it you can live with it\, she chronicled the housewife’s daily struggles in her column “At Wit’s End” from 1965 to 1996\, eventually appearing in more than over 900 newspapers across the country. She also shared both poignant and hilarious observations in 12 books\, including the best sellers The Grass is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank and If Life is a Bowl of Cherries\, What Am I Doing in the Pits? Bombeck brought to American awareness the lives of homemakers whose efforts often felt invisible and taken for granted.
