SUMMARY:Artist Talk & Opening Reception "Surviving the Burn: Room to Breathe"
DESCRIPTION:Artist Reception\nSaturday\, October 18th\, 3-6p \nArtist Talk\nSaturday\, October 18th\, 4-5p \nDerrick Beasley is an artist living in Durham\, NC. Beasley’s work includes sculpture\, photographic collage\, painting and social practice to immerse viewers in the speculative vision and material reality of the world he is designing. Beasley is a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University Sociology program and the Georgia State University Masters in Public Administration Program. He uses this background and his 20 years of experience as an organizer\, educator and his deep commitment to being in right relationship with the non-human world to shape his art practice and overall engagement with community. \nTiger Strikes Asteroid Greenville is excited to present: Surviving the Burn; Room to Breathe\, our next exhibition by Durham-based multidisciplinary artist Derrick Beasley. The exhibition explores a speculative future shaped by a reframed Black masculinity – one that exists in a deep\, reciprocal relationship with the non-human world. Spanning painting\, sculpture\, photography and film\, Beasley maps a future where people have embraced ways of being that challenge expected ideas of survival and identity. The exhibition asks – and answers – who survives “the burn” – and how communities adapt\, resist\, and thrive in its aftermath. Room to Breathe is informed by histories and fictions of fugitivity and marronage\, particularly within North Carolina and other wetland geographies. These layered narratives intersect with contemporary social justice organizing efforts that operate from a world-building perspective. The work in this exhibition blends speculative technologies\, cultural artifacts\, and the persistence of Southern cultures\, encouraging viewers to rethink survival as transformation\, rooted in community\, history\, and care. \nThe exhibition was supported by TSA GVL member Sterling Bowen.

SUMMARY:Music on Sunday Concert Series - Richie Zellon Jazz Trio
DESCRIPTION:Prepare for an unforgettable afternoon of musical exploration with acclaimed jazz guitarist Richie Zellon and his Trio. Hailed by the Latin Jazz Network as “a\nphenomenal guitarist who is possessed with a magical tone… whose ideas are based on a mystical musical map that doffs its proverbial hat to Jimi Hendrix as much as it does to Miles Davis\,” Zellon blends tradition with innovation\, crafting a sound that is both timeless and daring. The program includes a dynamic repertoire\, showcasing standards from the Great American Songbook\, the rhythmic allure of Brazilian and Latin jazz\, and Zellon’s own originals—all woven\ntogether with improvisation. Expect expressive storytelling through music\, from tender ballads to fiery\, dynamic explorations\, as the Trio crafts a journey that transcends genres and generations. Zellon will be joined by Nathan Lambertson on upright bass and Kevin Korschgen on drums.

We’re all about connecting and offering support; belonging makes life worth living. We also believe that art lifts the spirit. \nPartner with Us:\nCurrently\, our stunning new building at 113 Mills Ave. is adorned with art donated by local artists. One or two local artists will be exhibited each quarter; each artist will have three months of exhibition time. \nThe Space:\nYour artwork will be displayed on a total of 41’ of linear wall space in our inviting\, light-filled second-floor mezzanine and hallways. Floor plan with measurements is attached (red lines indicate available wall space). This is a beautiful area ideal for artist receptions and talks. \nThe Art:\nWe seek proposals for art for our 2026 exhibits that align with the NCC’s mission to equip patients and their caregivers for the most successful journey through cancer. We wish to give our clients respite from their challenges and uplift their spirits. SUMMARY:Introduction to Portrait Painting in Oils
DESCRIPTION:This six-week course offers a comprehensive introduction to the classical\, indirect method of portrait painting. Students will work step by step through the traditional process of building a portrait\, beginning with drawing and progressing from an underpainting through glazing to final touches. By the end of this course\, each participant will create a portrait while developing a deeper understanding of structure\, form\, and color. \nCourse Outline: \nWeek 1: Drawing & Structure of the Head\nLearn the foundations of portrait drawing\, focusing on proportion\, placement\, and the anatomy of the head and face. This week will be spent with graphite and charcoal. We will look at some examples from Art History to see how portrait painting was approached throughout art history. \nWeek 2: Beginning the Grisaille\nStart the monochromatic underpainting to establish composition\, form\, and tone. \nWeek 3: Refining the Grisaille\nContinue developing the grisaille\, closing forms and clarifying structure to create a strong foundation for color. \nWeeks 4–6: Glazing & Opaque Layers\nIntroduce transparent glazes and opaque layers of paint to build depth\, luminosity\, and naturalistic skin tones. Explore how light moves across form\, refine mark-making techniques\, and discover how to create depth on a 2 dimensional surface. \nThroughout the course\, students will gain an understanding of the structure of the head and facial features\, learn practical tools for mixing a variety of skin tones\, and develop a repeatable process for future portrait projects. \nClass will meet on the following dates from 6 PM – 8:30 PM: 9/18\, 9/25\, 10/2\, 10/9\, 10/16\, 10/23 (If anyone needs to miss a class\, 10/30 is available for a makeup session.) \nCost: $300 for all 6 session or $55 per session if you need to miss one\n*Class participants will receive a discount on all other events for September/October. SUMMARY:Septura Brass
DESCRIPTION:Ensemble in residence at the Royal Academy of Music in London\, Septura brings together the best brass players in the UK—holding principal positions in the Royal Philharmonic\, London Symphony\, BBC Symphony and Philharmonia orchestras. With unparalleled skill and virtuosity\, the musicians have forged a chamber group described as “dazzlingly polished” (BBC Music Magazine)\, now firmly established as one of the best in the world. Exploring a great transatlantic relationship\, the septet charts a course from Debussy’s Préludes through Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite to Gershwin’s Preludes and his iconic An American in Paris\, arranged for brass and solo car horns.

SUMMARY:Fall Orchestral Concert
DESCRIPTION:Covenant Church\n1310 Old Spartanburg Rd\, Greer\, SC 29650 \nBorodin – Polovtsian Dances. Bright tone colors\, graceful melodic lines\, and energetic rhythms create a feeling of celebration and joy. The 1953 musical Kismet is mostly adapted from Borodin’s music\, including these dances. Stranger in Paradise is adapted from the Gliding Dance of the Maidens. Do you recall the opening of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi – a flying girl sweeping through a winter dreamscape? The music was from Polovtsian Dances. \nRimsky-Korsakov – Russian Easter Festival Overture is an ode to nature’s blazing rebirth after winter’s dark slumber. Solemn chants\, combined with folk music and joyful revelry\, reflect the transition from the somberness of Passion Week to the jubilance of Easter Sunday. The music calms the mind and stirs hope in the soul. \nAs a pre-Thanksgiving tradition\, Foothills asks their audience to help Greer Community Ministries replenish their food pantry for needy families by donating canned goods at this performance. \nJoin us at the reception following the concert and get to know the musicians over food and conversation. Concert\, reception and parking – absolutely FREE!
