SUMMARY:Mono no aware: Photography by Leigh Mitchell
DESCRIPTION:Fall is a season of contrasts. The days begin with a chill\, foretelling the coming winter\, then closing with an afternoon of summer heat. We sweater-up in the morning to then shed a layer or two by lunch. We notice the trees are still green\, but that green is dull\, faded\, browning on the edges\, ready for winter rest. Mitchell’s photographs celebrate this seasonal contrast\, the natural cycles of birth and death\, and remind us of the fragility of these cycles. \nHer title\, Mono no aware is a Japanese phrase meaning “beauty tinged with sadness.” Mitchell states\, “More specifically it refers to the bittersweet awareness that all existence is ephemeral\, and every moment of life is short lived.” Nature’s ephemeral existence is not only the seasonal cycle but also the human sourced destruction of the natural cycle. Mitchell’s images of fall as beauty tinged with sadness conjure feelings … “of impending loss”…“feelings of vulnerability\, loss\, loneliness\, precariousness and foreboding.” She elaborates\, “Another translation for ‘mono no aware’ is ‘a sensitivity to things\,’ or noticing\, identifying with\, and having appreciation for things. As a result of this sensitivity\, a subtle ache accompanies the awareness that all things inevitably change form or come to an end. The transience of nature/of life/of reality makes it both haunting and precious.” \nMitchell often employed a Holga camera to record some of her landscapes. The Holga\, with limited control and range is plagued with imprecise outcomes not unlike humans attempts of dominion over the natural world with poor understanding of the long-range outcomes of those interventions. Mitchell applies the same methodical\, labor-intensive production in making digital ink jet prints from digital cameras as she does silver-gelatin prints from the Holga. By eliminating color\, she emphasizes the haunting beauty of these disappearing landscapes ravaged by society’s progress. \nLeigh Mitchell is an artist/educator. She holds a Master’s Degree in Studio Art from Western Carolina University. Her work has been exhibited at The Center for Fine Art Photography\, Fort Collins\, CO; the Rochester Contemporary Art Center\, Rochester\, NY; The Asheville Art Museum; and most recently\, in Greenville\, SC at The SE Center for Photography\, and at the Greenville Center for Creative Arts. Visit www.leighkendramitchell.com for more information. Mono no aware is a welcome to and introduction of Mitchell\, as a newly installed full-time photography instructor\, in Greenville Technical College’s Department of Visual Art.

SUMMARY:JUST A GLIMPSE
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, Sarkis Chorbadjian returned to Cyprus\, his birthplace\, where he spent two and a half weeks reconnecting with its landscapes\, villages\, and relaxed way of life. Not long after\, a major brush fire struck the region\, altering much of the countryside he had just visited. \nIn the studio\, this experience brought new energy to his work. His minimalist abstractions began to carry more form\, reflecting not only what was lost but also what endures. The paintings celebrate the strength of memory and the lasting impression of place offering glimpses of beauty that remain vivid despite change.

DESCRIPTION:Did you know that there is a major church mural project underway here in Greenville? In the ancient tradition of Christian iconography\, artist-in-residence Seraphim O’Keefe has been working for the last five years on a project that will continue for years to come. St. John of the Ladder Orthodox Church hosts occasional events for the public to see the work progress. Seraphim will give a tour\, with time between sections to study the murals\, while the choir sings selections from their a cappella tradition of hymnography. The songs bring out the meaning of the images as you observe. This event will be followed by light refreshments and a Q&A with the artist. Free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Jazz Underground: Joe Davidian Trio Tribute to Bill Evans
DESCRIPTION:The Greenville Jazz Collective Jazz Underground series presents the Joe Davidian Trio performing a tribute featuring the piano trio music of Bill Evans \nNearly all piano trios (piano\, bass\, and drums) playing today have somewhere “in their DNA” the sound of the many Bill Evans trios. What you’ll hear instead from Joe and his trio is a deep exploration of the music of Bill Evans from Joe’s experience both as a performer (playing for a number of years in major NYC clubs) and an educator (he leads the Jazz Studio at the Fine Arts Center here in Greenville). \nBill had led other piano trios\, but his 1960-1961 trio with bassist Scott LeFaro and drummer Paul Motian took the level of interplay between trio members to a level unseen before in jazz\, culminating in a series of famous recordings in June 1961 at the Village Vanguard before Scott’s untimely death. For the next 20 years until his own death\, Bill continued performing in a piano trio format with other major bassists and drummers…but always working with a great deal of interplay within the trio. \nNeedless to say\, presenting a tribute to Bill Evans is a demanding exploration. However\, Joe has been exploring this great music for over 20 years\, mastering the challenging dialog between piano\, bass\, and drums that the music of Bill Evans demands! Joining Joe in this exploration are Shannon Hoover on bass and Rick Dilling on drums. Both of them are uniquely suited to join Joe based upon their considerable musicality and subtlety. \nThe program will include repertoire from his entire piano career\, but with a special focus on those magical years with Scott LeFaro and Paul Motian. So this will be a great evening of jazz\, important to hear and a joy to listen to\, and aligning perfectly with the mission of the Greenville Jazz Collective! \nThey’ll be performing in our venue\, the Coffee Underground Theater\, which is an intimate listening room which also serves homemade desserts\, delicious coffee from beans roasted on premises\, and an assortment of teas\, wine\, and cocktails. Student discount available at ticket site

SUMMARY:Artist Talk & Opening Reception "Surviving the Burn: Room to Breathe"
DESCRIPTION:Artist Reception\nSaturday\, October 18th\, 3-6p \nArtist Talk\nSaturday\, October 18th\, 4-5p \nDerrick Beasley is an artist living in Durham\, NC. Beasley’s work includes sculpture\, photographic collage\, painting and social practice to immerse viewers in the speculative vision and material reality of the world he is designing. Beasley is a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University Sociology program and the Georgia State University Masters in Public Administration Program. He uses this background and his 20 years of experience as an organizer\, educator and his deep commitment to being in right relationship with the non-human world to shape his art practice and overall engagement with community. \nTiger Strikes Asteroid Greenville is excited to present: Surviving the Burn; Room to Breathe\, our next exhibition by Durham-based multidisciplinary artist Derrick Beasley. The exhibition explores a speculative future shaped by a reframed Black masculinity – one that exists in a deep\, reciprocal relationship with the non-human world. Spanning painting\, sculpture\, photography and film\, Beasley maps a future where people have embraced ways of being that challenge expected ideas of survival and identity. The exhibition asks – and answers – who survives “the burn” – and how communities adapt\, resist\, and thrive in its aftermath. Room to Breathe is informed by histories and fictions of fugitivity and marronage\, particularly within North Carolina and other wetland geographies. These layered narratives intersect with contemporary social justice organizing efforts that operate from a world-building perspective. The work in this exhibition blends speculative technologies\, cultural artifacts\, and the persistence of Southern cultures\, encouraging viewers to rethink survival as transformation\, rooted in community\, history\, and care. \nThe exhibition was supported by TSA GVL member Sterling Bowen.

DESCRIPTION:Prepare for an unforgettable afternoon of musical exploration with acclaimed jazz guitarist Richie Zellon and his Trio. The program includes a dynamic repertoire\, showcasing standards from the Great American Songbook\, the rhythmic allure of Brazilian and Latin jazz\, and Zellon’s own originals—all woven\ntogether with improvisation.
