SUMMARY:Conversing with Place
DESCRIPTION:Art & Light Gallery is pleased to present “Conversing With Place”\, a solo exhibition of work by Erin Hughes (Anderson\, S.C.) launching on the Art & Light website and in the gallery at 10:00 AM (EST) on Tuesday\, April 29 with an opening reception on Friday\, May 2 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. \n \nErin Hughes is a self-taught artist best known for her mixed-media encaustic paintings. She was an emerging artist at Artisphere in 2024 and her work has been featured in Faire\, Talk\, and TOWN Carolina magazine. Through the process of carving\, painting\, and fusing layers of encaustic medium and oils\, Hughes attempts to build the history of a relationship with the natural world. She focuses on the nuances of beauty\, especially the influence of nostalgia and loss on our daily lives. As her career began in film photography\, Erin’s paintings are highly influenced by the line of sight through a viewfinder where she decides what aspects of the landscape to include within the frame. \n \nIn “Conversing With Place” Hughes presents a collection of visual dialogues with places that offer the freedom to be out of time\, examining time as it is bound with grief to our past\, present\, and future. Inspired by a Wendell Berry poem Hughes states\, “Disentangled from the fragility of the current moment\, I can resist and rest. The simple beauty of the sky connects me to the deathless presence of love never lost. Light changing on flowers as the day progresses speaks of an eternal conversation\, a brief reprieve from my limited perspective. The encaustic painting process of melting wax\, struggling to shape and layer the image\, is a physical dynamic of the unpredictability of wax and time. As the wax cools\, the resin establishes permanence\, and time is bound yet again. The final landscape is a still point that holds the history of the conversation.”

SUMMARY:Waitress The Musical
DESCRIPTION:Sara Bareilles’ smash hit musical celebrating friendship\, motherhood\, and the magic of a well-made pie. \nJenna\, a waitress and expert pie maker\, is stuck in a small town and a loveless marriage. Faced with an unexpected pregnancy\, Jenna fears she may have to abandon the dream of opening her own pie shop…until a baking contest in a nearby county and the town’s handsome new doctor offer her a tempting recipe for happiness. Supported by her quirky crew of fellow waitresses and loyal customers\, Jenna summons the secret ingredient she’s been missing all along — courage. \nBrought to life on Broadway by a groundbreaking all-female creative team\, Waitress features original music and lyrics by six-time Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles (“Brave\,” “Love Song”)\, and a book by acclaimed screenwriter Jessie Nelson. Nominated for four Tony Awards (including Best Musical)\, and cherished by audiences and critics alike\, Waitress is inspired by Adrienne Shelly’s beloved film and offers a special recipe for finding happiness in unexpected places.

SUMMARY:“A Warm Embrace” by Shelley Cade
DESCRIPTION:If this show\, “A Warm Embrace” was a cafe beverage\, I feel it would be a mild roast with max froth and some subtle femininity. But more so than the blend and palette\, this show leans into the vessel this mid morning brew is enjoyed in. It is certainly a locally crafted pottery piece that is only enjoyed at home and when empty\, carefully hand washed to not chance damaging it. This cuppa fits nicely against my palms and radiates the perfect temperature throughout me. A comforting hug to start my art day. – Shelley \nCome see this body of work with your favorite Canvas coffee house beverage in hand and connect with art and other art enthusiasts. I’d love to meet you.

SUMMARY:Works by Adam du Shole and Claire Boyd Daniels
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an Opening Reception celebrating two intimate and powerful exhibitions. “Halcyon” by Adam du Shole & “Fragile” by Claire Boyd Daniels \nAdam du Shole’s Halcyon reflects on a childhood shaped by constant movement. His works act as self-made keepsakes—small memorials to past places and moments. Balancing celebration with the quiet ache of nostalgia\, Halcyon asks: when we leave a life behind\, what do we carry with us? \nClaire Boyd Daniels’ Fragile is a raw meditation on vulnerability. Created in moments of emotional reaching—like a prayer—her pieces give form to love\, grief\, fear\, and transformation. What was once whispered in the dark now comes forward into the light. \nCome early\, stay late. Refreshments provided.

SUMMARY:UNEARTHED
DESCRIPTION:UNEARTHED\, a solo exhibition featuring the work of Eleanor Palmer\, will have its opening at 906 Art Gallery on May 2nd from 6PM- 9PM. \nArtist Statement- \nI stepped outside\, confronted by the raw ocean waves tearing through mountain skies. \nBorn and cradled in these sacred mountains\, I had never before felt them tremble\, or \nwitnessed creek beds knocking at front doors\, demanding to be let in. Tires hung on the \ntreetops; homes lay in broken pieces; roads erased completely; families scattered\, \nstruggling\, missing. Helene\, what have you done? Held in disbelief\, I was consumed by the loudest silence I have ever heard. Together\, we inhaled. Together\, we exhaled\, releasing an intuitive\, collective cry. \nAs an artist\, I practice listening deeply to the language of nature and leaning into the \nguidance of intuition. Navigating the wilderness of grief\, I found myself in a trance\, \nabsorbing the new landscapes around me. I fell in love with the vibrant colors revealed in Helene’s aftermath. I was inspired by the rich red clay clinging to the roots of fallen oaks. Sitting by the creeks\, I marveled at the shifting constellations of mica in the wet sand. I drew closer to the present moment\, feeling both collected and scattered\, buried and unearthed\, falling apart and coming together all at once. \nAs you enter this space with me\, I invite you to explore the interplay of chaos and comfort presented through a mixture of mediums and a mixture of paint and natural minerals. Engage with your own stories of change and survival. Search for the echoes of your own experiences\, visually exploring the soft\, void spaces alongside the bold\, textured gestures. What reveals itself to you?

SUMMARY:Introduction to Indirect Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Discover the exciting and unique properties of oil painting in this introductory course designed for beginners and enthusiasts alike as we transform a reference photo into a compelling painting. Why must a canvas be primed? Why should you not finger paint with oils (and why we do anyways)? \nBasic Techniques: Learn fundamental techniques of indirect oil painting\, starting from a grisaille (under painting) and moving to glazing (transparent washes of paint) and scumbling (opaque application of paint). \nHow to turn your photo into a painting: Discover what kind of image makes a good reference photo and how to push your image past the limits of the photograph. \nColor Theory: Understand the basics of color theory and how to create harmonious palettes in your paintings. \nPersonal Expression: Discover ways to express your unique artistic voice through the medium of oil paint. \nClass Format: \nThis hands-on course combines demonstrations\, practical exercises\, and individualized instruction to help you build confidence and proficiency in oil painting. SUMMARY:VHS Showing. Dark Water (2002)
DESCRIPTION:From the directer of Ringu (1998)\, Hideo Nakata\, Village Horror Screenings presents DARK WATER (2002). \n“Like taking a long slow drink of water and having it all go down the wrong pipe\, DARK WATER overflows with atmosphere until you’re literally drowning in it.” \n— Lance Schibi\, LETTERBOXD \nDripping faucets have never been so horrifying. Often overshadowed by the American remake starring Jennifer Connelly\, DARK WATER is one of the key Japanese movies from the early 2000s that redefined the cultural landscape of horror. Recently divorced\, Yoshimi moves into a new apartment with her daughter Ikuku. And that’s when some dripping water leads Yoshimi to discover a terrifying secret. Written and directed by the team behind RINGU\, DARK WATER doubles as a dreamy spookshow and a touching portrait of a woman’s journey in the face of difficulties. This movie is chilling\, stylized\, and beautiful\, and we love it. Even if it makes us never want to set foot near a bathtub again.

SUMMARY:Art of Thieves: Jazz fusion quartet
DESCRIPTION:Art of Thieves (AOT) is a jazz quartet originally assembled by Wheel Sessions host and drummer\, Kevin Korschgen. Built on a concept of shared leadership among its members\, each having a creative voice\, the ensemble looks to push musical boundaries. The band’s approach to making music instinctively combines many musical genres with jazz: rock and pop\, Latin\, African\, and avant-garde. With a current membership that includes tenor saxophonist Peter Dimery\, pianist Philip Howe\, bassist Nathan Lambertson\, and Korschgen on drums\, the quartet will emerge with a new sound at the Greenville jazz Festival … Duke Ellington famously said\, “The composition begins when the musicians are chosen”. \n https://youtu.be/3BSfpUE4OnQ \nhttps://youtu.be/NIZQbCnao5g
