SUMMARY:What Happens in a Space- four women making prints: Sept. 5 - Oct. 25
DESCRIPTION:“What Happens in a Space…” consists of artwork by four artists whose creative connection began when they were classmates in a printmaking class with Marty Epp-Carter in her studio. Fanny\, Nancy and Si come to their art-making from different perspectives\, but one common thread unites their work; a commitment to material experimentation with a curiosity about the world around them. These result in a body of work for each artist that pushes the visual boundaries of the human form\, nature’s subtle details\, and the near and far of the psychic landscape.\nThe Exhibit runs through Oct. 2th and viewable from 9:30-12:30 Sundays. There will be a reception for the artists Thursday\, September 24th from 5-7pm

SUMMARY:Tyrone Jackson Quartet - Wheel Session 122
DESCRIPTION:The name Tyrone Jackson is the quintessential jazz piano player. His boundless creativity and harmonic mastery utilize the piano as a blank canvas. Jackson is nationally recognized and has traveled the world as a solo artist and sideman. Born in the New Orleans cradle of jazz\, Jackson embodies the spirit of the Crescent City. The blends of jazz\, funk\, and Afro-Caribbean melodies are ever present in his work. But\, of course\, musicians are never solely influenced by themselves. Jackson’s teachers are a virtual Who’s Who of great jazz piano players ranging from Ellis Marsalis and Mary Ann Bulla to gospel/classical legend Moses Hogan.
As a composer\, Jackson has composed original music for Pulitzer Prize-winning author Natasha Trethewey’s book of poems\, “Native Guard” turned theatrical play\, Pearl Cleage’s play\, “Tell Me My Dream\,” “Ethel” by Terri Burrell\, and the Alliance Theater production of “Nick’s Flamingo Grill” and the 2023 release of North Carolina Black Repertory Theater’s “Phenomenal Woman.” Jackson has recorded 4 Albums—“Dedicated\,” “Another Voyage\,” “Melody In Nede\,” and their new release “From The Mind Of.” Additionally\, Jackson’s work in “Native Guard” premiered in Los Angeles\, CA\, at the famous Sage Hills Academy from January 9-15\, 2017.
In addition to his composition skills\, the jazz wonder is most known for his compelling solos. Jackson’s improvisational skills allow him to become a part of the song\, whether he softly highlights ballads or tears through fast-paced standards.\nCurrently\, Tyrone Jackson is a professor at Kennesaw State University\, where he is a Senior Lecturer of Jazz Piano and teaches a myriad of classes\, including Aural Skills III & IV\, Jazz Improvisation I\, II & III\, Jazz Combo\, Jazz Theory\, Applied Jazz Piano\, Group Jazz Piano\, Music Entrepreneurship\, and History of the Blues. Jackson’s influence extends beyond the university\, where he is a clinician and teacher for the Rialto Arts Jazz program for middle school\, a clinician for Sound Learning\, and a clinician for the Clayton County Arts Association. Jackson is also a doctoral candidate at Georgia State University seeking a Ph.D. in Music Education. His dissertation thesis is: Extending Agency To Improvisation Students By Utilizing Corpus Tools For The Acquisition Of Jazz Language.\nJackson has performed with Steve Turre\, Larry Carlton\, Carmen Bradford\, Earl Klugh\, Karla Harris\, Melba Moore\, Wynton Marsalis\, Branford Marsalis\, Wycliffe Gordon\, Vincent Gardner\, Joe Lovano\, Dave Douglas\, Wes Anderson\, Greg Dawson\, Jennifer Holiday\, Karen Briggs\, Clay Jenkins\, Russell Gunn\, David Sanchez\, Damaris Carbough\, Stephanie Mills\, Avery Sunshine\, Russell Malone\, Victor Wooten\, Marcus Miller along with opening for Esperanza Spaulding\, Gerald Albright\, Spyro Gyra and the Crusaders\, and Chaka Kahn. SUMMARY:2-Day Pastel Portrait Workshop with Christine Swann
DESCRIPTION:September 19th-20th\, 9:30am-4:00pm \nBuild a portrait over this 2-day workshop using the 5-layer process of master pastelist\, Christine Swann. Along with learning how to control the pastel medium\, students will learn about the Law of Light and the Rules of Light to paint anything more realistically. You will never paint the same way again. \nMATERIALS LIST : \nPAPER – a gritted\, pastel surface will be supplied. \nPORTRAIT REFERENCE – will need a photo reference to use for the classes. I will supply the reference I am using to everyone in the class or you can use any reference that you want to draw from of your own as long as it meets the following criteria: \nIt has a strong lit area on the face. \nIt has some shadows somewhere on the face. \nIt has clear highlights on the face. This is very important! \nIt is large enough and clear enough to see the “crease” above the lash line above the eyes. If you can not clearly see this line in the photo then the photo reference will not be good enough to work from. I suggest you use mine. \nIt will be beneficial to get pencils in the following colors because as we go along in the initial drawing\, it is beneficial to change colors and “reset” the drawing in newer\, darker colors. The key is to get at least 4 values and color changes – from a light ochre color up to darker browns and then a black. Any brands are fine. \nA yellow pencil will also be needed. If you only have one yellow pencil\, just keep an exacto blade nearby to sharpen as needed. \nThe brands of pencils do not matter. I use different brands. I keep an Exacto blade nearby\, but I never worry about a “perfect” point.  You should not either. \nPASTELS – You will need pastel sticks from each “category” below. *The 3/4 power category is optional. The more low-chroma colors the better in each category. Please don’t feel as though you need to buy more sticks. I am a big believer in not having to have every single brand out there. As long as you have a pretty good range of colors in at least one brand in each of the categories below you are all set. The more pastel pencils the better. \nPastel CATEGORIES: \nLOW POWER – all pastel pencils (no matter what brand) Rembrandts\, Nupastels\, Creatacolors or any old square Grumbachers ***Please bring as many pastel pencils as you can. \nMEDIUM POWER – Giraults\, Winsor Newton\, Blue Earth\, Diane Townsend\, Mount Vision\, Unisons\, Older Richesons or any old round Grumbachers\, \n3/4 POWER– OPTIONAL — Terry Ludwigs\, Newer Richesons\, Schminckes\, Ming Art Pastels \nHIGH POWER – Senneliers\, Great Americans\, Roches \nIf you have questions on what you have or what you need\, please reach out. \nChristine @swannportraits.com

SUMMARY:HERE THERE ARE BLUEBERRIES
DESCRIPTION:A mysterious photo album arrives at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum\, revealing chilling images of SS officers at Auschwitz living seemingly ordinary lives. Based on a true story\, Here There Are Blueberries unfolds like a gripping historical detective story — one that asks unsettling questions about memory\, humanity\, and how evil often looks painfully normal. Haunting\, and impossible to shake. \nWHY SEE THIS SHOW:  Created by the acclaimed Tectonic Theater Company\, which first captured the moving and urgent THE LARAMIE PROJECT\, HERE THERE ARE BLUEBERRIES is dramatized documentary theater at its finest. \nThe LA Times called it “The greatest detective story ever written.” A Pulitzer Prize finalist\, this true story is fascinating and engaging. It provides ample contemporary resonance as well as unique insight into one of the darkest times in recent history. A true ensemble piece\, combined with a captivating story\, makes this a perfect Warehouse Theatre play. \nHere are two quotes from the show that capture the “why” astutely: \n“Asserting ordinariness in the face of the extraordinary is\, in itself\, an immensely political act.” \n“[The photos] makes us see the SS as people–and that is difficult for us. We want to think of them as monsters so we don’t have to look in the mirror.  Sometimes when people look at the world of Auschwitz\, they focus on the killing and they forget that the killing is the result of a long process. No genocide starts with the killing.  Every genocide starts with words.”
