SUMMARY:Turning Heads: Intro to Oil Painting Hair
DESCRIPTION:Hair has always been one of the most psychologically loaded subjects in figurative painting — and one of the most technically misunderstood. In this six-week course\, you’ll learn to approach hair not as individual strands to render\, but as form\, light\, and mass — studying braids\, curls\, and coils the way the Old Masters did. Working in the indirect oil painting method\, you’ll begin with black-and-white grisaille and build toward full color\, using the back of a subject’s head as your motif — a compositional choice with a long and quietly powerful tradition in art history. \nEach class session includes a live demo\, examples drawn from art history\, and dedicated studio time on your own painting. Along the way\, we’ll discuss the structure of the skull and neck\, how light moves across complex hair forms\, and what it means — emotionally and conceptually — to paint a figure who is turned away. \nOpen to beginner and intermediate oil painters. Limited to 6 students. \nMaterial list will be provided upon registration. \nClass Dates: \nSept. 3 \nSept. 10 \nSept. 17 \nSept. 24 \nOct. 1 \nOct. 8 \nClass time: \n6:00 PM – 8:30 PM \nPrice: $300 for the full series\, or $65 per session

SUMMARY:Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center
DESCRIPTION:American Soundscapes \nCelebrating the rich voices of American composers\, 13 musicians in the CMS explore a range of musical expressions that define the nation’s cultural landscape. William Bolcom’s lively Rag infuses playful energy into the string quartet\, while Amy Beach’s Piano Quintet\, a cornerstone of American chamber music\, blends lyrical vibrancy with innovative harmonies. Bernard Herrmann’s Psycho Suite\, performed in its original instrumentation for strings\, brings the suspense of his iconic film score into the concert hall with gripping intensity and dark beauty. The concert concludes with Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring Suite\, a quintessentially American work that captures the hope and optimism of life on the frontier. \nFREE and open to the public. Ticket reservations open two weeks prior to the performance.

SUMMARY:Curiosities
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to an Artist Reception with Traci Wright Martin celebrating the opening of “Curiosities.” Traci is an award-winning charcoal and mixed media artist and internationally published author. Through this collection\, viewers are invited to carefully observe the thoughtful relationships between realism and folded origami\, and explore intricate mixed media details. \n“Curiosities grew from the simple act of paying attention\,” says Martin. “The more time I spend observing the wildlife around me and folding paper by hand\, the more I realize that curiosity isn’t about finding certainty\, but is about remaining open to unexpected connections and allowing wonder to shape the way we see the world.” \nJoin us during First Fridays\, October 2 from 6-9pm. Come meet the artist and hear about the observations and creative rituals that inspired Curiosities.

SUMMARY:Time Capsule: Erin Hughes and Liz Rundorff Smith
DESCRIPTION:Art & Light Gallery presents Time Capsule\, an exhibition of work by Erin Hughes (Anderson\, S.C.) and Liz Rundorff Smith (Greenville\, S.C.) launching on the Art & Light website and in the gallery at 10am (EST) on Tuesday\, September 29 with an opening reception on Friday\, October 2 from 6:00 – 9:00 PM. \nErin Hughes received a BA in Biology from James Madison University and an MA in Science Education from Boston University. Hughes began working with film photography in high school and started painting in 2015. Always motivated to learn and further her technical proficiency\, she honed her skills in the encaustic and oil painting mediums under the tutelage of artists like Lisa Pressman\, Mark Russell\, and Jeffrey Hirst. Hughes explores the connection between beauty and loss in her work. \nFor Hughes\, the encaustic work included in the Time Capsule exhibition explores our limited ability to retain fleeting visual experiences in the natural world. Because we can only hold onto fragmented details of a landscape\, we ultimately experience a deep sense of loss as time passes and we lose clarity. With the passage of time\, the memory of a place is expressed in fading light\, deep shadow\, and the layered\, obscured textures of the wax itself. \nLiz Rundorff Smith received a BA in Studio Art with a concentration in sculpture from the College of Wooster in Wooster\, OH\, and an MFA in Painting from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. She studied abroad at The Marchutz School of Painting in Aix-en-Provence\, France\, and the British Institute of Florence in Florence\, Italy and was later awarded a fellowship and residency at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts. Her work can be found in private and corporate collections\, including the Marilyn Monroe Bungalow at the Beverly Hills Hotel and Sun City Showa Kinen Koen in Tachikawa\, Japan. \nIn Time Capsule\, Rundorff Smith confronts the feeling of loss that accompanies physical deterioration and the uncomfortable reality of existing in an aging body. She processes this vulnerability by gathering paper scraps left over from her templates of vessel forms\, transforming discarded remnants into entirely new\, hybrid structures. By recycling fragments of paper that would usually be thrown away\, she shows that time and experience are never truly wasted. Ultimately\, the work centers on rebuilding\, framing her change in creative process as a continuous journey rather than a break from the past.
