SUMMARY:Music on Sunday Concert Series - The Spartina Consort
DESCRIPTION:Spartina Consort will highlight music by renowned Baroque era women composers and explore their connections to some of their (now) better known male contemporaries. The women contributed to the rich musical life around them in various ways. Princess Anna Amalia of Prussia\, a powerful Abbess as well as composer\, was sister to Frederick the Great and the patron of CPE Bach. Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre a professional composer for Louis XIV\, worked alongside Marais and other prominent French musicians. Isabella Leonarda\, an Italian nun\, was one of the most prolific composers of her time. Spartina Consort is an ensemble of Charleston musicians with a passion for playing Renaissance and Baroque music on authentic instruments. Members are: Susan Conant (recorder)\, Marcy Jean Brenner (viola da gamba)\, David Hunt (viola da gamba) and Julia Harlow (harpsichord).

SUMMARY:BLU Time: Ceramics by Deighton Abrams
DESCRIPTION:Deighton Abrams’ Artist Talk on Thursday\, February 19 at 2pm as a closing for his exhibition BLU Time. \nBLU Time is disorienting by design. The first gallery or “Black Room” is organized to call to mind a cabinet of curiosities. Finely crafted lustrous black vessels sport crude\, other-worldly attachments that resemble familiar objects but are intentionally indistinct. In contrast\, other black vessels are fabricated as unrefined\, vaguely familiar forms. The vessels are tightly gathered in a nightmarish but playful grouping intended to mimic our current absurd politics and environmental corruption. \nThe second room or “Blue Room” continues the exploration of “our current predicament” with increased emphasis on spiritual/landscape narratives. Deighton explains\, “Through sculptural scenes\, I explore the anxieties and disillusionment born from a landscape of political turmoil and ecological crisis.” Deighton’s material choices of cheap lumber\, ubiquitous pink insulation board are all intentional environmental symbols. He contrasts these basic building materials with the preciousness of clay embellished with delicate brushwork that records his symbolic clouds and indistinct landscapes. The spirituality of BLU Time culminates in “Autonomy Stone and Altar” as it commands the end wall of the “Blue Room” surrounded by niche sculptures. There is no spiritual peace in BLU Time only unsettling\, off kilter\, fore shadowing that portend no catharsis. \nDeighton is a ceramic sculptor and educator. He is currently a lecturer in art at Auburn University. He completed his MFA in Studio Ceramics at Clemson University and his undergraduate studies Magna Cum Laude at Armstrong University (now Georgia Southern University) in Savannah\, Georgia. Though originally from Alaska\, he has spent an equal amount of time in the South including Georgia\, Texas\, and South Carolina. He has shown work both nationally and internationally. Thank you\, Deighton\, for not only delivering your work but also generously coming to GTC to give a Gallery Talk on February 19. \nBLU Time is on view now through February 19 in the Department of Visual Arts\, Greenville Technical College. The Benson Campus Galleries at 2522 Locust Hill Road are open to the public Monday – Thursday\, 9am – 7pm and Friday\, 9am – 2pm. Visit www.gvltec.edu/dva for more information or call Pat Owens\, Gallery Assistant at 864 250-3051 or email Fleming Markel\, Gallery Director at fleming.markel@gvltec.edu.

SUMMARY:Ernest Hemingway portrayed by John Dennis Anderson
DESCRIPTION:Ernest Hemingway – A novelist\, journalist and short story writer\, Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) revolutionized all three literary forms with his abbreviated style\, earning him the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for The Old Man and the Sea and the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature. His adventurous life was as rebellious and noteworthy as his writings\, making him a celebrity as famous for his exploits as for his writing. It was a life of warring\, bull fighting\, woman chasing\, drinking\, big-game hunting and fishing that was romanticized during his lifetime as well as now. A member of the post-war Lost Generation\, he married four times and witnessed and wrote about both world wars and the Spanish Civil War. Obsessed with death and living with grace under pressure\, Hemingway died by his own hand at age 61. \nJohn Dennis Anderson\, a native of Waco\, Texas now living on Cape Cod\, is a performance studies scholar and Professor Emeritus in Communication Studies at Emerson College in Boston. With degrees from Baylor University and the University of Texas at Austin\, concentrated in the study of literature through performance\, he is the author of The Student Companion to William Faulkner (Greenwood\, 2007). Anderson has received numerous grants to develop Chautauqua performances and performs widely as the authors Henry James\, William Faulkner\, Washington Irving\, Lynn Riggs\, Robert Frost\, Henry Beston\, Louis Bromfield\, Ernest Hemingway\, Marshall McLuhan and Christopher Isherwood. He was a faculty member for Humanities North Dakota’s Chautauqua Training Institute. He received the 2013 Leslie Irene Coger Award for Distinguished Performance and the 2019 Lilla A. Heston Award for Outstanding Scholarship in Interpretation and Performance Studies\, both from the National Communication Association. His website is jdanderson.org.

The First Friday Reception is February 6\, 6-9 pm. These award-winning student works represent the best of the best from Greenville Tech’s Department of Visual Arts (DVA). 52 Visual Arts students entered 138 works in DVA’s annual fall juried competition. 55 works were juried into the 2025 “Visual Arts Annual Student Exhibition\,” and 34 were awarded cash prizes. \nMany thanks to our 2025 VAASE juror\, Denise Woodward-Detrich\, the Director of Lee Gallery in the Department of Art at Clemson University and a ceramic artist herself. Denise took a day out of her busy schedule to view all the entries and choose works that comprised VAASE including 34 Awards now on view. She stated\, “I’ve seen many artworks over the years\, and I’ve always been impressed with the quality of work being produced by Greenville Tech students. The tradition of excellence within Greenville Tech’s Department of Visual Arts is widely known!!” \nThe Department of Visual Arts at Greenville Tech offers associate degrees and certificates in fine arts\, graphic design\, photography\, and web design. Greenville Tech’s DVA graduates are highly sought after by local advertising firms\, professional photographers\, and regional universities. 34 Awards showcases DVA’s varied curriculum: ceramics\, design & color\, digital imagery\, drawing\, graphic design\, photography\, typography\, and web design. Join us at 34 Awards to celebrate the success and diligence of all GTC’s student artists and the excellence of the DVA faculty. All high school students interested in continuing studies in visual arts can discover the quality and breadth of Greenville Tech’s locally available art education by visiting 34 Awards.\nVAASE awards were made possible by generous contributions from the Jean T. and Heyward G. Pelham Foundation\, plus the Metropolitan Arts Council (MAC) with funds received from the City of Greenville\, BMW Manufacturing Company\, SEW Eurodrive and the South Carolina Arts Commission. The MAC grant funds are matched by our 2025 corporate sponsors APCO Plastics\, Bennetts’ Frame & Art Gallery\, Suburban Paint\, and the Greenville Tech Foundation. Their generosity made it possible for us to double the total amount of cash awards from previous years. Thank you. \nThank you to Shaun McCallum of Good Art Co. for demonstrating his enthusiasm for emerging artists by hosting 34 Awards. Please visit getgoodart.co or call (864) 381-7539.
