Persona Poetry creates a space for exploration by the poet. By engaging a speaker or character clearly separate from the poet this type of poetry allows the audience to distinguish between speaker and poet. Persona poetry offers a “safety net,” or space for a poet to explore ideas outside of his/her identity. In this workshop we will begin by reading poetry that successfully uses a controversial narrator. Key poets will be Ai and Tony Hoagland. Once we examine their techniques we will write our own persona pieces then edit them in workshop.
