Artist Statement

My work is about questions. What is the deepest part of yourself? What is the deepest part of the people you know? Who are you? Who am I? What does the soul look like? How do you define something that defies definition?

My photographs ask these questions, but without the expectation of an answer. The actions that happen after the asking - the expression on the face, the gesture with the hand, the light on the mountain - must, in their own way, point to the truth without ever revealing it fully.

This process, taken on faith, is what matters: to dive into the deep end and to be alive right now, at this moment.

My photographs are potential conversations and dialogues. In a portrait I create an environment of relaxed conversation so my subject may be more of their true, inner self. The images, then, become a mirror for them - hopefully of knowing and acceptance, and as the artist I have garnered insight into the human condition. In a landscape I’m stepping into an environment indifferent of my existence, and however that makes me feel is reflected back upon myself so that I may know and accept who I am within nature.

My images are mostly black and white, but I use color as well - whatever will help me bring a feeling state to better understand ourselves and our place in the world.

Joseph Campbell once said the privilege of a lifetime is being who you are. My artistic expression is about asking that question: Who are you? to others and ultimately myself.
