Liberty and Linearity

Digital Illustrations by Bruce Plourde

Paintings by Shannon Plourde

July 22nd 4:00pm – 8:00pm

At Pendleton West in Downtown Greenville

Show from August 6th-24th

Just as the Chrysler and Empire State  buildings distinguish NYC's skyline, the Liberty Bridge in Greenville defines our beautiful little city of opportunity.  To Bruce and Shannon Plourd, the Liberty Bridge represents opportunity.  As the bridge helped to transform a blighted section of the city into one of life and potential, the imagineers behind this week's "Liberty and Linearity" exhibit are working together to bring the same transition to the "west-most" side of the city.

Jill Hooper

June 26 – September 26, 2010

A series of self portraits by Charleston native Jill Hooper.

“This show is really about the effort to live an honest life. These paintings have gone in a direction that is sincere to me.” –Jill Hooper

Hooper will be in Greenville for a gallery talk about her work at 6:30 pm on Thursday, August 12.

The Greenville County Museum of Art has scheduled free “drop-in” tours of A Portrait of Greenville on Sundays in June.  Scheduled for 2 pm, these gallery talks are an entertaining and informative way to explore this popular new exhibition.
Veteran docents will lead the tours, each presenting the exhibition in a unique style and with a fresh point of view.

Mike Murphy on June 13; Nancy Barry on June 20; and John Bies on June 27.
A Portrait of Greenville will be on view through September 26, 2010. Visitors can also explore two new related exhibitions: a selection of Moore’s drawings, After Sans Souci, will be on view May 13–June 27, and an in depth look at the development of a portrait can be seen through June 13 in Stephen Scott Young: Alicia.

White Whale Studios & Gallery
401 Smythe St.
Greenville, SC 29611

Unbeknownst to most of Greenville, a greatly neglected piece of the Historical Monaghan Mill Village has been undergoing an amazing transformation. A beautiful old home built circa 1890 has been restored and repurposed as the White Whale Studios & Gallery.
The Studio's name hearkens back to Melville's infamous tale of a determined white whale outwitting the relentless Captain Ahab, just as the artists, within the walls of this old white house, battle the odds to pursue their work and life's calling.
The two-story house features a large welcoming front porch, a main gallery downstairs and seven individual working studios upstairs and down. Located three miles from downtown Greenville off 183, it is only one mile from the flourishing Pendleton Arts District.

Woodcuts

Kent Ambler

About his work, Kent says, “My work is autobiographical. It is derived from my life and surroundings, my observations. Subjects, themes, and even concepts do materialize in my work through the passage of time. I generally can’t tell you what it is that I am working on until viewing a series of work in retrospect. With the help of hindsight it becomes very obvious what was going on in my life at that given time.”

Layers in Time

Carole Knudson Tinsley

When asked about her recent paintings Carole replied, “I have been working in a series that relates to ancient cultures as well as earth forms. While I do paint in an impressionistic and abstract manner, I strive to be a good shape maker of whatever subject I am interpreting.”

Prologue

Cicile L. K. Martin

When asked about her art, Cecile said, “I work in series, often using the human condition as a source of imagery. I like to make use of a wide range of media, both 2D and 3D, and I’m especially fond of the interaction of graphic media and paper. My newest series uses mono-prints as the basis for developing abstract images, which may suggest mythological subjects, still life, or landscape.”

Opening Reception June 4, 6-9

This will be a family fun exhibition and event for the First Friday Weekend of June 4, and continuing June 6-9. We want to have a fun filled exhibition of pet friendly artworks inspired by the ones we love, “our PETS”. We also hope to see many folks out and about with cuddly creatures (in your arms or on a leash, please). We are now open on Saturdays from noon-4, and we would like to see folks come out in the West Greenville Pendleton Street Arts District. UVA plans to host a family friendly art area with projects for the kid in all of us.

Imperial Splendor: Renaissance Tapestries from Vienna
May 21 - September 19, 2010
Royal Renaissance tapestries from one of the premier museums of fine arts and decorative arts in the world, the Kunsthistorisches of Vienna, will be on view in the Dawn Helfont Christopher Galleries. The richness and artistic quality of the tapestries make the collection one of the most important tapestry collections in the world and one of the most magnificent of its kind. Each of these eight exquisite tapestries, intricately crafted, measures from 11- to 12-feet high and from 12- to 18-feet long. The tapestries came to the Kunsthistorisches Museum from the collections of King Matthias (Holy Roman Emperor 1612-1619) and King Francis I (1708-1765). A Tapestry Symposium will be held of Friday, June 11 in conjunction with the exhibition. The exhibition marks the first time these centuries-old tapestries have traveled to the United States. This exhibition is developed by the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, and tour organized by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC.

The showing in Columbia, South Carolina is part of a 10-city national tour over a three-year period containing approximately 79 vessels and sculptures of ceramics from the collection of the Ceramics Research Center, Arizona State University Art Museum. SC6: Six South Carolina Innovators in Clay
On view in the Mamie and Andrew Treadway, Jr. Gallery 15
June 16 - September 19, 2010
Drawn from public and private collections, six innovative ceramic artists who are, or have been active in South Carolina, are featured in this Gallery 15 installation. The works illustrate a diverse range of technique, glazes and forms for which the artists are best known. Featured artists include: Russell Biles, from Greenville, whose figural sculptures are deeply laden with social and political commentary; Jim Connell, whose sinuous vessels are decorated with elaborate glazes, many of which are inspired by ancient Chinese ceramics; Georgia Henrietta Harris, a member of the Catawba Nation, who is largely credited with reviving the Catawba pottery tradition; Peter Lenzo, whose technically complex sculptures recall the 19th-century Southern "face jug" tradition yet remain completely unique; Ron Meyers, whose functional ceramics are brightly slip-painted in a gestural, expressionistic style that can be both provocative and confrontational; and Virginia Scotchie, current chair of the ceramics department at USC, who incorporates familiar shapes when creating her vessels that possess complex and luminous glazes.
