"Penland Landscape Series"
Inspired by life experiences, I create abstracted landscapes through subjective responses to color, striving for balance in the composition. I paint large format abstractions using acrylic, oil pastel and graphite on panel. When elements and topography from the natural world around me lends inspiration, I try to capture it. I create a sketch and work with it until it has a balance of elements and principles that create a strong composition. This helps determine what is foreground vs. background, and helps teach me exactly what excites me about the piece. Then I recreate it on a larger format using color to connote the feeling I am trying to translate.
